Front Seat Back Will Not Return From Reclined Position

Applicability

NOTE
Only applicable to vehicles without Rear Seat Entertainment DVD Headrests.

Introduction

Some customers of 2008-2009 MY Scion xB (w/o Rear Seat Entertainment DVD Headrests) may experience a condition where their front seat back does not return to upright from the reclined position without manually raising the seatback to the upright position. An improved seat spring has been developed to correct this condition. Use the following repair procedure to address customers' concerns.

Warranty Information

APPLICABLE WARRANTY

^ This repair is covered under the Toyota Comprehensive Warranty. This warranty is in effect for 36 months or 36,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the vehicle's in-service date.

^ Warranty application is limited to correction of a problem based upon a customer's specific complaint.

Inspection Procedure

1. Verify seat is not equipped with Rear Seat Entertainment DVD Head Rests

2. Verify seat will not return upright from reclined position.

Repair Procedure

1. Remove Reclining Adjuster Release Handle.





A. Fold the seat back forward.

B. Using a plastic pry tool, disengage the claw and remove the reclining adjuster release handle.





2. Remove vertical adjuster cover (driver side only) by disengaging the 3 claws.





3. Remove vertical adjuster handle (driver side only) by removing the 2 screws.

4. Remove Front Seat Cushion Shield.





A. Remove the 3 screws.

B. Disengage the 2 claws, and remove the front seat cushion shield.

5. Remove Outside Spiral Spring.





A. Insert a screwdriver between the spiral spring and the side frame.

B. Using the screwdriver, push against the spiral spring, just below the frame stopper and against the side frame lip behind the spring.

C. Remove the spiral spring.

CAUTION
Use caution when removing the spiral spring as it may separate quickly.

Installation Procedure

1. Install New Spiral Spring.





A. Replace the spiral spring with a NEW one.

Install the new spiral spring.





B. Using a rope, pull the spring end until it rests against the frame stopper. (Pull backwards, towards rear of car).

NOTE
While pulling the spring hold the spring so that is does not separate from the seat.





C. Remove the rope.





2. Adjust the seat back forward and backward several times.

3. Assembly is reverse of disassembly.
