Valve Body: Service and Repair

VALVE BODY ASSEMBLY

COMPONENTS:





REMOVAL
1. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL

CAUTION: Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to prevent airbag and seat belt pretensioner activation.

2. REMOVE ENGINE UNDER COVER LH
3. DRAIN AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE FLUID
a. Remove the drain plug and gasket, and drain the ATF.
b. Install a new gasket and the drain plug.
Torque: 49 Nm (500 kgf-cm, 36 ft. lbs.)

4. REMOVE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE OIL PAN ASSEMBLY





a. Remove the 18 bolts, oil pan and gasket.

NOTICE: Some fluid will remain in the oil pan. Remove all of the oil pan bolts, and carefully remove the oil pan assembly. Discard the gasket.





b. Remove the 2 magnets from the oil pan.





c. Examine the particles in the oil pan.
1. Collect any steel chips with the removed magnets. Look at the chips and particles in the oil pan and on the magnets carefully to determine the type of wear which might be found in the transaxle.
Steel (magnetic): bearing, gear and plate wear
Brass (non-magnetic): bearing wear





5. DISCONNECT TRANSMISSION WIRE
a. Disconnect the 5 solenoid valve connectors.
b. Remove the bolt and lock plate, and separate the ATF temperature sensor.
6. REMOVE VALVE BODY OIL STRAINER ASSEMBLY





a. Remove the 3 bolts and oil strainer.

NOTICE: Be careful as some fluid will come out of the oil strainer.





b. Remove the O-ring from the oil strainer.
7. REMOVE TRANSMISSION VALVE BODY ASSEMBLY





a. Support the valve body, and remove the 17 bolts and valve body.

NOTICE: Be careful not to drop the check ball body and spring.





b. Remove the check ball body and spring.





c. Remove the 5 bolts and 5 solenoid valves.

INSTALLATION
1. INSTALL TRANSMISSION VALVE BODY ASSEMBLY





a. Install the 5 solenoid valves with the 5 bolts.
Torque:
6.6 Nm (67 kgf-cm, 58 inch lbs.) for bolt A
11 Nm (112 kgf-cm, 8 ft. lbs.) for bolt B
Bolt length:
12 mm (0.47 inch) for bolt A
45 mm (1.77 inch) for bolt B





b. Install the spring and check ball body.





c. Align the groove of the manual valve with the pin of the lever.
d. Install the valve body with the 17 bolts.
Torque: 11 Nm (110 kgf-cm, 8 ft. lbs.)

NOTICE:
^ Push the valve body against the accumulator piston spring and the check ball body to install it.
^ First, temporarily tighten the bolts marked with a *1 in the illustration because they are positioning bolts. for bolt length:

25 mm (0.984 inch) for bolt A
41 mm (1.614 inch) for bolt B
45 mm (1.771 inch) for bolt C

2. INSTALL VALVE BODY OIL STRAINER ASSEMBLY





a. Coat a new O-ring with ATF.
b. Install the O-ring to the oil strainer.





c. Install the oil strainer with the 3 bolts.
Torque: 11 Nm (112 kgf-cm, 8 ft. lbs.)





3. INSTALL TRANSMISSION WIRE
a. Coat a new O-ring with ATF and install it to the ATF temperature sensor.
b. Install the ATF temperature sensor with the lock plate and bolt.
Torque: 6.6 Nm (67 kgf-cm, 58 inch lbs.)
c. Connect the 5 solenoid valve connectors.
4. INSTALL AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE OIL PAN SUBASSEMBLY





a. Install the 2 magnets in the oil pan.
b. Apply seal packing or equivalent to the 18 bolts.
Seal packing: THREE BOND 1344 or equivalent

NOTICE: Apply seal packing or equivalent to the bolts and tighten them within 10 minutes after application because the bolts should be seal bolts.





c. Install a new gasket and the oil pan to the transaxle case with the 18 bolts.
Torque: 7.8 Nm (80 kgf-cm, 69 inch lbs.)

5. INSTALL ENGINE UNDER COVER LH
6. ADD AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE FLUID
Fluid type: T-IV
Standard capacity: 3.5 liters (3.7 US qts, 3.1 Imp. qts)
7. INSPECT AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE FLUID
a. Inspect the fluid.
8. CONNECT CABLE TO NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL
9. PERFORM INITIALIZATION
a. Perform initialization.

NOTICE: Certain systems need to be initialized after disconnecting and reconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal.

10. RESET MEMORY
