Knock Sensor: Service and Repair

REMOVAL

1. DISCHARGE FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE
2. DRAIN COOLANT
3. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL

CAUTION: Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to prevent airbag and seat belt pretensioner activation.

4. REMOVE FRONT WIPER ARM HEAD CAP
5. REMOVE FRONT WIPER ARM LH
6. REMOVE FRONT WIPER ARM RH
7. REMOVE HOOD TO COWL TOP SEAL
8. REMOVE COWL TOP VENTILATOR LOUVER LH
9. REMOVE WIPER LINK
10. REMOVE COWL TOP PANEL OUTER




a. Remove the wire harness clamp.
b. Remove the 7 bolts and panel.

11. REMOVE COWL BODY MOUNTING BRACKET LOWER LH




a. Remove the bolt, clip and bracket.

12. REMOVE ENGINE COVER
13. REMOVE AIR CLEANER CAP
14. REMOVE THROTTLE BODY
15. REMOVE FUEL DELIVERY PIPE
16. REMOVE FUEL TUBE




a. Remove the fuel tube clamp.
b. Pinch the retainer as illustrated, and then pull the fuel tube connector out of the pipe.






NOTE:
- Remove any dirt and foreign objects on the fuel tube connector before performing this work.
- When disconnecting the connector, do not damage the connector and pipe, and do not allow foreign matter to contact the connector and pipe. Damage or foreign matter may damage the O-ring that seals the pipe and lead to leaks.
- Perform this work by hand. Do not use any tools.
- Do not forcibly bend, twist or turn the nylon tube.
- Protect the disconnected part by covering it with a plastic bag after disconnecting the fuel tube.
- If the fuel tube connector and pipe are stuck, push and pull to release them.

17. REMOVE HEATER WATER INLET HOSE




a. Remove the hose clamp.




b. Remove the heater water inlet hose from the heater radiator unit and cylinder head.

18. REMOVE HEATER WATER OUTLET HOSE




a. Remove the heater water outlet hose from the heater radiator unit and water by-pass pipe.

19. REMOVE INTAKE MANIFOLD




a. Disconnect the union to check valve hose from the brake booster.




b. Disconnect the camshaft timing oil control valve connector.
c. Remove the wire harness clamp.
d. Remove the union to check valve hose from the vacuum hose clamp.
e. Remove the 5 bolts, 2 nuts and intake manifold.




f. Remove the gasket from the intake manifold.

20. REMOVE INTAKE MANIFOLD INSULATOR




a. Remove the intake manifold insulator from the cylinder block.

21. REMOVE KNOCK SENSOR




a. Disconnect the sensor connector.
b. Remove the nut and sensor.

INSTALLATION

1. INSTALL KNOCK SENSOR




a. Install the sensor with the nut.

Torque: 20 N.m (205 kgf.cm, 15 ft.lbf)

NOTE: Make sure that the knock sensor is in the correct direction.

b. Connect the sensor connector.

2. INSTALL INTAKE MANIFOLD INSULATOR




a. Install the intake manifold insulator onto the cylinder block.

3. INSTALL INTAKE MANIFOLD




a. Install a new gasket into the intake manifold.




b. Install the intake manifold with the 5 bolts and 2 nuts.

Torque: 30 N.m (305 kgf.cm, 22 ft.lbf)

c. Fit the union to check valve hose into the vacuum hose clamp.
d. Install the wire harness clamp.
e. Connect the camshaft timing oil control valve connector.




f. Connect the union to check valve hose to the brake booster.

NOTE: Make sure that the paint mark and hose clamp are at the correct angle.

4. CONNECT HEATER WATER OUTLET HOSE




a. Install the heater water outlet hose to the water bypass pipe and heater radiator unit.

NOTE: Make sure that the paint mark and hose clamp are at the correct angle.

5. CONNECT HEATER WATER INLET HOSE




a. Install the heater water inlet hose to the cylinder head and heater radiator unit.

NOTE: Make sure that the paint mark and hose clamp are at the correct angle.





b. Install the hose clamp.

NOTE: Make sure that the paint mark and hose clamp are at the correct angle.

6. INSTALL FUEL TUBE




a. Align the fuel tube connector with the pipe, and then push the fuel tube connector until the retainer makes a "click" sound to connect the fuel tube to the pipe.

NOTE:
- Check that there are no scratches or foreign objects around the connected part of the fuel tube connector and pipe before performing this work.
- After connecting the fuel tube connector, check that the fuel tube connector and pipe are securely connected by pulling them.

7. INSTALL FUEL DELIVERY PIPE
8. INSTALL THROTTLE BODY
9. INSTALL AIR CLEANER CAP
10. INSTALL COWL BODY MOUNTING BRACKET LOWER LH




a. Install the bracket with the bolt and clip.

Torque: 13 N.m (135 kgf.cm, 10 ft.lbf)

11. INSTALL COWL TOP PANEL OUTER




a. Install the panel with the 7 bolts.

Torque: 13 N.m (135 kgf.cm, 10 ft.lbf)

b. Install the wire harness clamp.

12. INSTALL WIPER LINK
13. CONNECT CABLE TO NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL
14. ADD ENGINE COOLANT
15. CHECK FOR ENGINE COOLANT LEAKAGE
16. CHECK FOR FUEL LEAKAGE
17. INSTALL ENGINE COVER
18. INSTALL COWL TOP VENTILATOR LOUVER LH
19. INSTALL HOOD TO COWL TOP SEAL
20. INSTALL FRONT WIPER ARM RH
21. INSTALL FRONT WIPER ARM LH
22. REMOVE FRONT WIPER ARM HEAD CAP
23. PERFORM INITIALIZATION
a. Perform initialization.

NOTE: Certain systems need to be initialized after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal.
