Rear Axle Hub

REAR AXLE CARRIER

ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION
1. CHECK REAR AXLE SHAFT BEARING





a. Remove the rear wheel.
b. Disconnect the rear brake cylinder.
c. Remove the rear disc.
d. Inspect the axle shaft backlash.
1. Using a dial indicator, check the backlash near the center of the axle shaft.
Maximum backlash: 0.05 mm (0.0020 inch)
If the backlash is greater than the maximum, replace the bearing.

NOTICE: Ensure that the dial indicator is set at right angles to the measurement surface.





e. Inspect the axle shaft deviation.
1. Using a dial indicator, check the deviation at the surface of the axle shaft.
Maximum deviation: 0.07 mm (0.0028 inch)
If the deviation is greater than the maximum, replace the bearing.

REMOVAL

HINT:
^ Use the same procedures for the RH and LH side.
^ The procedures listed are for the LH side.

1. REMOVE REAR WHEEL





2. DISCONNECT REAR DISC BRAKE CYLINDER ASSEMBLY
a. Remove the 2 bolts and disconnect the rear disc brake cylinder assembly.

NOTICE: Use a string or equivalent to keep the brake caliper from hanging down by the flexible hose.





3. DISCONNECT SKID CONTROL SENSOR WIRE
a. Remove the bolt and disconnect the skid control sensor wire.
b. Disconnect the connector.
4. REMOVE REAR DISC
5. REMOVE PARKING BRAKE SHOE ADJUSTING SCREW SET
a. Remove the parking brake shoe adjusting screw set.
6. REMOVE NO. 1 PARKING BRAKE SHOE ASSEMBLY
a. Using SST, remove the No. 1 parking brake shoe assembly.

7. DISCONNECT NO. 2 PARKING BRAKE SHOE ASSEMBLY
a. Using SST, remove the No. 2 parking brake shoe assembly.

8. REMOVE NO. 3 PARKING BRAKE CABLE ASSEMBLY
a. Using needle-nose pliers, disconnect the No. 3 parking brake cable assembly from the backing plate.





9. DISCONNECT LOWER CONTROL ARM ASSEMBLY
a. Loosen the lower control arm assembly bolt (member side).
b. Remove the cotter pin and nut.
c. Using SST, disconnect the lower control arm assembly from the axle carrier.

10. DISCONNECT REAR NO. 1 SUSPENSION ARM ASSEMBLY





a. Remove the clip and nut.
b. Using SST, disconnect the suspension arm (ball joint side).

c. Remove the bolt and nut, and then separate the rear suspension arm.

NOTICE: When removing the bolt, hold the nut in place.





11. DISCONNECT REAR UPPER CONTROL ARM ASSEMBLY
a. Remove the bolt and nut, and then disconnect the upper control arm from the axle carrier.

NOTICE: When removing the bolt, hold the nut not in place.





12. REMOVE REAR AXLE CARRIER SUB-ASSEMBLY
a. Remove the 4 bolts, nut, hub and bearing assembly and back plate assembly from the rear axle carrier.





13. INSPECT REAR AXLE CARRIER SUB-ASSEMBLY
a. As shown in the illustration, flip the ball joint stud back and forth 5 times before installing the nut.
b. Using a torque wrench, turn the nut continuously at a rate of 3 to 5 seconds per turn and take the torque reading on the 5th turn.
Torque:
Maximum turning torque 3.0 Nm (30 kgf-cm, 27 inch lbs.)

NOTICE:
^ Neither abnormal drag nor rattle exists during the rotation.
^ There should be no cracks, grease leakage or deformation on the dust cover.

INSTALLATION

HINT:
^ Use the same procedures for the RH and LH side.
^ The procedures listed are for the LH side.
^ A bolt without a torque specification is shown in the standard bolt chart.





1. INSTALL REAR AXLE CARRIER SUB-ASSEMBLY
a. Install the hub and bearing assembly and back plate assembly to the rear axle carrier with the 4 bolts and nut.
Torque:
56 Nm (571 kgf-cm, 41 ft. lbs.) for bolt
140 Nm (1,428 kgf-cm, 103 ft. lbs.) for nut





2. TEMPORARILY TIGHTEN REAR UPPER CONTROL ARM ASSEMBLY
a. Temporarily tighten the upper control arm with the bolt and nut.

HINT: Insert the bolt from the rear side of the vehicle and temporarily install the bolt.





3. TEMPORARILY TIGHTEN REAR NO. 1 SUSPENSION ARM ASSEMBLY
a. Temporarily tighten the rear suspension arm (ball joint side) with the bolt and nut.

HINT: Insert the bolt from the rear side of the vehicle and temporarily install the bolt.





4. TEMPORARILY TIGHTEN LOWER CONTROL ARM ASSEMBLY
a. Temporarily tighten the lower control arm with the nut.





5. INSTALL NO. 3 PARKING BRAKE CABLE ASSEMBLY
a. Install the No. 3 parking brake cable to the backing plate with the bolt.
Torque: 8.0 Nm (82 kgf-cm, 71 inch lbs.)

6. APPLY HIGH TEMPERATURE GREASE
a. Apply high temperature grease.
7. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE SHOE LEVER
a. Install the parking brake shoe lever.
8. INSTALL NO. 1 PARKING BRAKE SHOE ASSEMBLY
a. Install the No. 1 parking brake shoe assembly.
9. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE SHOE ADJUSTING SCREW SET
a. Install the parking braking brake shoe adjusting screw set.
10. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE SHOE STRUT
a. Install the parking brake shoe strut.
11. CHECK PARKING BRAKE INSTALLATION
a. Check the parking brake installation.
12. INSPECT AXLE HUB BEARING BACKLASH
a. Inspect the axle hub bearing backlash.
13. INSPECT AXLE HUB BEARING DEVIATION
a. Inspect the axle hub bearing deviation.
14. INSTALL REAR DISC
15. ADJUST PARKING BRAKE SHOE CLEARANCE
a. Adjust the parking brake shoe clearance.





16. INSTALL REAR DISC BRAKE CYLINDER ASSEMBLY
a. Install the rear disc brake caliper with the 2 bolts.
Torque: 47 Nm (475 kgf-cm, 34 ft. lbs.)





17. CONNECT SKID CONTROL SENSOR WIRE
a. Connect the skid control sensor wire with the bolt.
Torque: 5.0 Nm (51 kgf-cm, 44 inch lbs.)
b. Connect the connector.

HINT: Do not twist the sensor wire when installing the sensor.

18. INSTALL REAR WHEEL
Torque: 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.)

19. STABILIZE SUSPENSION
a. Stabilize the suspension.
20. FULLY TIGHTEN REAR UPPER CONTROL ARM ASSEMBLY
a. Fully tighten the bolt and nut.
Torque: 74 Nm (755 kgf-cm, 55 ft. lbs.)

NOTICE: When installing the bolt, hold the nut in place.

21. FULLY TIGHTEN REAR NO. 1 SUSPENSION ARM ASSEMBLY
a. Fully tighten the nut (ball joint side).
Torque: 105 Nm (1,071 kgf-cm, 77 ft. lbs.)
b. Install a new clip.

NOTICE: If the holes for the clip are not aligned, tighten the nut an additional 60°.

c. Fully tighten the bolt and nut.
Torque: 74 Nm (755 kgf-cm, 55 ft. lbs.)

NOTICE: When installing the bolt, hold the nut in place.

22. FULLY TIGHTEN LOWER CONTROL ARM ASSEMBLY
a. Fully tighten the nut.
Torque: 105 Nm (1,071 kgf-cm, 77 ft. lbs.)
b. Install a new cotter pin.

NOTICE: If the holes for the clip are not aligned, tighten the nut an additional 60°.

c. Fully tighten the bolt (member side).
Torque: 115 Nm (1,173 kgf-cm, 85 ft. lbs.)

NOTICE: When installing the bolt, hold the nut in place.

23. INSPECT AND ADJUST PARKING BRAKE LEVER TRAVEL
a. Inspect and adjust the parking brake lever travel.
24. INSPECT AND ADJUST REAR WHEEL ALIGNMENT
a. Inspect and adjust the rear wheel alignment.
25. CHECK ABS SPEED SENSOR SIGNAL
a. Check the ABS speed sensor signal.
