Front Axle Hub
FRONT AXLE HUBCOMPONENTS:
COMPONENTS:
ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION
1. CHECK FRONT AXLE HUB BEARING
a. Remove the front wheel.
b. Disconnect the front disc brake caliper.
c. Remove the front disc.
d. Inspect the axle hub backlash.
1. Using a dial indicator, check the backlash near the center of the axle hub.
Maximum backlash: 0.05 mm (0.0020 inch)
If the backlash is greater than the maximum, replace the bearing.
e. Inspect the axle hub deviation.
1. Using a dial indicator, check the deviation on the surface of the axle hub.
Maximum deviation: 0.05 mm (0.0020 inch)
If the deviation is greater than the maximum, replace the bearing.
REMOVAL
HINT:
^ Use the same procedures for the RH and LH side.
^ The procedures listed are for the LH side.
1. REMOVE FRONT WHEEL
2. DISCONNECT FRONT STABILIZER LINK ASSEMBLY
a. Remove the nut, and disconnect the stabilizer link assembly.
HINT: If the ball joint turns together with the nut, use a 6 mm hexagon wrench to hold the stud in place.
3. REMOVE FRONT AXLE HUB NUT
a. Using SST and a hammer, unstake the staked part of the nut.

NOTICE: Loosen the staked part of the nut completely, otherwise the screw of the drive shaft may be damaged.
b. While applying the brakes, remove the lock axle hub nut.
4. DISCONNECT FRONT SPEED SENSOR
a. Remove the bolt, and disconnect the speed sensor wire and flexible hose from the shock absorber.
HINT: Be careful not to damage the speed sensor.
b. Remove the bolt, and separate the speed sensor front from the steering knuckle.
NOTICE:
^ Be careful not to damage the speed sensor.
^ Prevent foreign matter from attaching to the speed sensor.
5. DISCONNECT FRONT DISC BRAKE CYLINDER ASSEMBLY
a. Remove the 2 bolts and disconnect the disc brake caliper from the steering knuckle.
NOTICE:
^ Use a string or equivalent to keep the brake caliper from hanging down by the flexible hose.
^ The friction surface of the pad and disc must be free from oil, grease and paint.
6. REMOVE FRONT DISC
NOTICE: There should be no oil or grease on the friction surface of the pad and disc.
7. DISCONNECT TIE ROD END SUB-ASSEMBLY
a. Remove the cotter pin and nut.
b. Using SST, disconnect the tie rod end from the steering knuckle.

8. DISCONNECT FRONT NO. 1 SUSPENSION LOWER ARM SUB-ASSEMBLY
a. Remove the bolt and 2 nuts, and disconnect the suspension lower arm from the lower ball joint.
9. REMOVE FRONT AXLE ASSEMBLY
a. Using a plastic-faced hammer, disconnect the drive shaft from the axle hub.
NOTICE: Be careful not to damage the boot and speed sensor rotor.
b. Remove the 2 bolts, 2 nuts and steering knuckle from the shock absorber.
10. REMOVE FRONT LOWER BALL JOINT ASSEMBLY
a. Remove the cotter pin and nut.
b. Using SST, remove the ball joint.

11. REMOVE FRONT AXLE HUB HOLE SNAP RING
a. Using snap ring pliers, remove the hole snap ring.
12. REMOVE FRONT AXLE HUB SUB-ASSEMBLY
a. Hold the steering knuckle lightly in a soft vise.
NOTICE: Do not overtighten the vise.
b. Using SST, remove the axle hub.

c. Using SST, remove the bearing inner race (outside) from the axle hub.

13. REMOVE FRONT DISC BRAKE DUST COVER
a. Remove the 3 bolts and front disc brake dust cover from the steering knuckle.
14. REMOVE FRONT AXLE HUB BEARING
a. Place the bearing inner race (outside) on the axle hub bearing.
b. Using SST and a press, press out the axle hub bearing from the steering knuckle.

INSTALLATION
HINT:
^ Use the same procedures for the RH and LH side.
^ The procedures listed are for the LH side.
^ A bolt without a torque specification is shown in the standard bolt chart.
1. INSTALL FRONT AXLE HUB BEARING
a. Using SST and a press, press a new axle hub bearing into the steering knuckle.
SST 09950-60020 (09951-00720), 09950-70010 (09951-07100)
2. INSTALL FRONT DISC BRAKE DUST COVER
a. Install the front disc brake dust cover to the steering knuckle with the 3 bolts.
Torque: 8.3 Nm (85 kgf-cm, 73 inch lbs.)
3. INSTALL FRONT AXLE HUB SUB-ASSEMBLY
a. Using SST and a press, press in the axle hub subassembly.
SST 09608-32010, 09950-60010 (09951-00600), 09950-70010 (09951-07100)
4. INSTALL FRONT AXLE HUB HOLE SNAP RING
a. Using snap ring pliers, install the hole snap ring.
5. INSTALL FRONT LOWER BALL JOINT ASSEMBLY
a. Install the lower ball joint and torque the nut.
Torque: 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.)
b. Install a new cotter pin.
NOTICE: If the holes for the cotter pin are not aligned, tighten the nut an additional 60°.
6. INSTALL FRONT AXLE ASSEMBLY
a. Install the drive shaft to the front axle.
b. Install the steering knuckle with the 2 bolts and 2 nuts.
Torque: 240 Nm (2,447 kgf-cm, 177 ft. lbs.)
NOTICE:
^ Only when reusing the bolts and nuts, apply the small amount of engine oil to the screw parts of the nuts.
^ Be careful not to damage the outboard joint boot and speed sensor rotor.
7. INSTALL FRONT NO. 1 SUSPENSION LOWER ARM SUB-ASSEMBLY
a. Install the lower ball joint to the No. 1 front suspension lower arm with the bolt and 2 nuts.
Torque: 89 Nm (908 kgf-cm, 66 ft. lbs.)
8. INSTALL TIE ROD END SUB-ASSEMBLY
a. Install the tie rod end to the steering knuckle with the nut.
Torque: 49 Nm (500 kgf-cm, 36 ft. lbs.)
NOTICE: If the holes for the cotter pin are not aligned, tighten the nut an additional 60°.
9. INSTALL FRONT STABILIZER LINK ASSEMBLY
a. Install the front stabilizer link assembly with the nut.
Torque: 74 Nm (755 kgf-cm, 55 ft. lbs.)
HINT: If the ball joint turns together with the nut, use a 6 mm hexagon wrench to hold the stud in place.
10. INSTALL FRONT DISC
11. INSTALL FRONT DISC BRAKE CYLINDER ASSEMBLY
a. Install the front disc brake caliper assembly to the steering knuckle with the 2 bolts.
Torque: 107 Nm (1,090 kgf-cm, 79 ft. lbs.)
NOTICE: There should be no oil or grease on the friction surface of the pad and disc.
12. INSTALL FRONT AXLE HUB NUT
a. Using a 30 mm socket wrench, install a new axle hub nut.
Torque: 216 Nm (2,200 kgf-cm, 159 ft. lbs.)
13. REMOVE FRONT DISC BRAKE CYLINDER ASSEMBLY
a. Remove the 2 bolts and separate the disc brake caliper assembly from the steering knuckle.
NOTICE:
^ Use a string or equivalent to keep the brake caliper from hanging down by the flexible hose.
^ There should be no oil or grease on the friction surface of the pad and disc.
14. REMOVE FRONT DISC
15. INSPECT FRONT AXLE HUB BEARING BACKLASH.
a. Inspect the front axle hub bearing backlash.
16. INSPECT FRONT AXLE HUB BEARING DEVIATION
a. Inspect the front axle hub bearing deviation.
17. INSTALL FRONT DISC
18. INSTALL DISC BRAKE CYLINDER ASSEMBLY
a. Install the disc brake caliper assembly to the steering knuckle with the 2 bolts.
Torque: 107 Nm (1,090 kgf-cm, 79 ft. lbs.)
19. INSTALL FRONT SPEED SENSOR
a. Install the front speed sensor.
20. STAKE FRONT AXLE HUB NUT
a. Using a chisel and hammer, stake the axle hub nut.
21. INSTALL FRONT WHEEL
Torque: 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.)
22. INSPECT AND ADJUST FRONT WHEEL ALIGNMENT
a. Inspect and adjust the front wheel alignment.
23. CHECK ABS SPEED SENSOR SIGNAL
a. Check the ABS speed sensor signal.
