Steering Column: Service and Repair

STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY
OVERHAUL
1. PRECAUTION
2. DISCONNECT BATTERY NEGATIVE TERMINAL
3. INSPECT PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD
4. REMOVE HORN BUTTON ASSEMBLY





5. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY
a. Disconnect the connector.
b. Remove the steering wheel assembly set nut.
c. Put matchmarks on the steering wheel assembly and main shaft assembly.
d. Using SST, remove the steering wheel assembly.
SST 09950-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05021)
6. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN COVER





a. Remove the 3 screws and steering column cover LWR.





b. Remove the 2 bolts and steering column cover UPR.





7. DISCONNECT FLOOR SHIFT PARKING LOCK CABLE ASSEMBLY (A/T TRANSAXLE)
a. With the key in the ACC position, disengage the claw and pull out the floor shift parking lock cable.
8. REMOVE SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY
9. REMOVE HEADLAMP DIMMER SWITCH ASSEMBLY
a. Disconnect the connector and remove the headlamp dimmer switch assembly.
10. REMOVE WINDSHIELD WIPER SWITCH ASSEMBLY
a. Disconnect the connector and remove the windshield wiper switch assembly.
11. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN HOLE COVER PLATE





12. DISCONNECT STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY
a. Put matchmarks on the steering intermediate shaft assembly and steering intermediate shaft.
b. Remove the bolt, and then disconnect the steering intermediate shaft assembly.





13. REMOVE STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY
a. Put matchmarks on the steering intermediate shaft assembly and main shaft assembly.
b. Remove the bolt and steering intermediate shaft assembly.





14. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY
a. Disconnect the connectors and wire harness clamps from the steering column assembly.
b. Remove the bolt and steering column assembly.





15. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN UPPER W/SWITCH BRACKET ASSEMBLY
a. Using a centering punch, mark the center of the 2 tapered-head bolts.
b. Using a 3 to 4 mm (0.12 to 0.16 inch) drill, drill into the 2 bolts.
c. Using a screw extractor, remove the 2 bolts and steering column upper w/switch bracket assembly.
16. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN CLAMP UPPER
17. REMOVE STEERING MAIN SHAFT BUSH
a. Using a screw driver, remove the steering main shaft bush from the steering column assembly.
18. REMOVE STEERING MAIN SHAFT ASSEMBLY





a. Using a snap ring expander, remove the steering main shaft snap ring (outer side).





b. Using a brass bar and a hammer, remove the steering main shaft assembly and steering main shaft bearing.

NOTICE: Be careful not to drop the steering main shaft assembly.





c. Using a snap ring expander, remove the steering main shaft snap ring (inner side).





19. REMOVE IGNITION SWITCH LOCK CYLINDER ASSEMBLY
a. Place the ignition switch lock cylinder assembly in the ACC position.
b. Push down the stop pin with a screwdriver, and pull out the cylinder assembly.





20. REMOVE UN-LOCK WARNING SWITCH ASSEMBLY
a. Disconnect the un-lock warning switch assembly connector from the ignition or starter switch assembly.
b. Remove the un-lock warning switch assembly.
21. REMOVE IGNITION OR STARTER SWITCH ASSEMBLY
a. Remove the 2 screws and ignition or starter switch assembly from the steering column bracket assembly.
22. INSTALL IGNITION OR STARTER SWITCH ASSEMBLY
a. Install the ignition or starter switch assembly to the steering column bracket assembly with the 2 screws.
23. INSTALL UN-LOCK WARNING SWITCH ASSEMBLY





a. Install the un-lock warning switch assembly.
b. Connect the un-lock warning switch assembly connector to the ignition or starter switch assembly.





c. Using a new clamp, fix the wire harness of the unlock warning switch assembly to the steering column bracket assembly UPR as shown in the illustration.

NOTICE: When fixing the wire harness, do not tighten the clamp too hard. It could damage inside the wire harness.

24. INSTALL IGNITION SWITCH LOCK CYLINDER ASSEMBLY
a. Make sure that the ignition switch lock cylinder assembly is in the ACC position.
b. Install the ignition switch lock cylinder assembly.
25. INSPECT STEERING LOCK OPERATION
a. Check that the steering lock mechanism is activated when removing the key.
b. Check that the steering lock mechanism is deactivated when inserting the key and turning it to the ACC position.
26. INSPECT STEERING COLUMN TUBE SUB-ASSEMBLY
a. Check the condition of the steering column tube bearing rotation and check for abnormal noise.
If the hearing in worn or damaged, replace the steering column assembly.
27. INSTALL STEERING MAIN SHAFT ASSEMBLY





a. Using a snap ring expander, install a new steering main shaft snap ring (inner side) to the steering main shaft assembly.
b. Install the steering main shaft assembly to the steering column tube.





c. Using a snap ring expander, install a new steering main shaft snap ring (outer side) to the steering main shaft assembly.





28. INSTALL STEERING MAIN SHAFT BUSH
a. Using SST and a hammer, install a new steering main shaft bearing.
SST 09612-22011





29. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN UPPER W/SWITCH BRACKET ASSEMBLY
a. Temporarily install the steering column upper w/switch bracket assembly and steering column upper clamp with 2 new tapered-head bolts.
b. Tighten the 2 tapered-head bolts until the bolt heads break off.





30. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY
a. Insert the steering column assembly from the front side, and install the steering column clamp to the instrumental reinforcement assembly.
b. Install the steering column assembly with the bolt.
Torque: 21 Nm (210 kgf-cm, 15 ft. lbs.)
c. Connect the connectors and wire harness clamps.





31. INSTALL STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY
a. Align the matchmarks on the intermediate shaft assembly and main shaft assembly.
b. Install the steering intermediate shaft assembly with the bolt.
Torque: 28 Nm (286 kgf-cm, 21 ft. lbs.)

NOTICE: Install the intermediate shaft assembly with the distinction paint facing the steering column assembly side.





32. CONNECT STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY
a. Align the matchmarks on the steering intermediate shaft assembly and steering intermediate shaft.
b. Connect the steering intermediate shaft assembly with the bolt.
Torque: 28 Nm (286 kgf-cm, 21 ft. lbs.)
33. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN HOLE COVER PLATE
34. INSTALL WINDSHIELD WIPER SWITCH ASSEMBLY
a. Install the windshield wiper switch assembly and connect the connector.
35. INSTALL HEADLAMP DIMMER SWITCH ASSEMBLY
a. Install the headlamp dimmer switch assembly and connect the connector.
36. PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD
37. INSTALL SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY
38. CONNECT FLOOR SHIFT PARKING LOCK CABLE ASSEMBLY (A/T TRANSAXLE)
39. CONNECT CHECK KEY INTERLOCK OPERATION
40. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN COVER





a. Install the steering column cover UPR with the 2 bolts.
Torque: 21 Nm (210 kgf-cm, 15 ft. lbs.)





b. Install the steering column cover LWR with the 3 screws.
41. ADJUST SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY
42. INSTALL STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY
a. Align the matchmark with the one on the steering wheel assembly and steering main shaft assembly.
b. Install the steering wheel assembly with the set nut.
Torque: 50 Nm (510 kgf-cm, 37 ft. lbs.)
c. Connect the connector.
43. INSPECT HORN BUTTON ASSEMBLY
44. INSTALL HORN BUTTON ASSEMBLY
45. STEERING WHEEL CENTER POINT
46. PERFORM VSC SYSTEM CALIBRATION
47. INSPECT SRS WARNING LIGHT
