Steering Column: Service and Repair

STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY
OVERHAUL
1. REFER TO AIR BAG SYSTEMS SERVICE PRECAUTIONS
2. DISCONNECT BATTERY NEGATIVE TERMINAL
3. PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD
4. REMOVE HORN BUTTON ASSEMBLY





a. Place the front wheels facing straight ahead.
b. Using a torx socket wrench (T30), loosen the 2 torx screws until the groove along the screw circumference catches on the screw case.





c. Disconnect the horn connector.





d. Remove the horn button assembly from the steering wheel assembly and support the horn button assembly with one hand as shown in the illustration.

NOTICE: When removing the horn button assembly, do not pull the airbag wire harness.

e. Using a screwdriver, disconnect the horn button assembly connectors.
f. Remove the horn button assembly.





CAUTION:
^ When storing the horn button assembly, keep the upper surface of the pad facing upward.
^ Never disassemble the horn button assembly.





5. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY
a. Disconnect the connector.
b. Remove the steering wheel assembly set nut.
c. Put matchmarks on the steering wheel assembly and main shaft assembly.
d. Using SST, remove the steering wheel assembly.
SST 09950-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09950-05021)
6. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN COVER





a. Remove the 3 screws and the steering column cover LWR.





b. Remove the 2 bolts and the steering column cover UPR.





7. DISCONNECT FLOOR SHIFT PARKING LOCK CABLE ASSEMBLY (A/T TRANSAXLE)
a. With the key in the ACC position, disengage the claw and pull out the floor shift parking lock cable.
8. REMOVE SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY
9. REMOVE HEADLAMP DIMMER SWITCH ASSEMBLY
a. Disconnect the connector and remove the headlamp dimmer switch assembly.
10. REMOVE WINDSHIELD WIPER SWITCH ASSEMBLY
a. Disconnect the connector and remove the windshield wiper switch assembly.
11. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN HOLE COVER PLATE
a. Remove the clip and the steering column hole cover plate.





12. DISCONNECT STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY
a. Put matchmarks on the intermediate shaft and steering intermediate shaft assembly.
b. Remove the bolt, and then disconnect the steering intermediate shaft assembly.





13. REMOVE STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY
a. Put matchmarks on the main shaft assembly and steering intermediate shaft assembly.
b. Remove the bolt and the steering intermediate shaft assembly.





14. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY
a. Disconnect the connectors and wire harness clamps from the steering column assembly.
b. Remove the bolt and steering column assembly.





15. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN UPPER W/ SWITCH BRACKET ASSEMBLY
a. Using a centering punch, mark the center of the 2 tapered-head bolts.
b. Using a 3 to 4 mm (0.12 to 0.16 inch) drill, drill a hole in the 2 bolt heads.
c. Using a screw extractor, remove the 2 bolts and steering column upper w/switch bracket assembly.
16. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN CLAMP UPPER





17. REMOVE STEERING MAIN SHAFT BUSH
Using a screwdriver and hammer, tap out the steering main shaft bush.
18. REMOVE STEERING MAIN SHAFT ASSEMBLY





a. Using a snap ring expander, remove the snap ring on the upper side.





b. Using an extension bar and hammer, remove the steering main shaft assembly.





c. Using a snap ring expander, remove the snap ring on the lower side.





19. REMOVE IGNITION SWITCH LOCK CYLINDER ASSEMBLY
a. Place the ignition switch lock cylinder assembly in the ACC position.
b. Push down the stop pin with a screwdriver, and pull out the cylinder assembly.





20. REMOVE UN-LOCK WARNING SWITCH ASSEMBLY
a. Disconnect the un-lock warning switch assembly connector from the ignition or starter switch assembly.
b. Remove the un-lock warning switch assembly.
21. REMOVE IGNITION OR STARTER SWITCH ASSEMBLY
a. Remove the 2 screws and ignition or starter switch assembly from the steering column bracket assembly.
22. INSTALL IGNITION OR STARTER SWITCH ASSEMBLY
a. Install the ignition or starter switch assembly to the steering column bracket assembly with the 2 screws.
23. INSTALL UN-LOCK WARNING SWITCH ASSEMBLY





a. Install the un-lock warning switch assembly.
b. Connect the un-lock warning switch assembly connector to the ignition or starter switch assembly.





c. Using a new clamp, fix the wire harness of the unlock warning switch assembly to the steering column bracket assembly UPR as shown in the illustration.

NOTICE: When fixing the wire harness, do not tighten the camp too hard. It could damage the wire harness inside.

24. INSTALL IGNITION SWITCH LOCK CYLINDER ASSEMBLY
a. Make sure that the ignition switch lock cylinder assembly is in the ACC position.
b. Install the ignition switch lock cylinder assembly.
25. INSPECT STEERING LOCK OPERATION
a. Check that the steering lock mechanism is activated when the key is removed.
b. Check that the steering lock mechanism is deactivated when the key is inserted and turned to the ACC position.
26. INSTALL STEERING MAIN SHAFT ASSEMBLY





a. Using a snap ring expander, install a new snap ring to the lower side.
b. Install the steering main shaft assembly.





c. Using a snap ring expander, install a new snap ring to the upper side.





27. INSTALL STEERING MAIN SHAFT BUSH
a. Coat a new steering main shaft bush with molybdenum disulfide lithium base grease.
b. Using SST and a hammer, tap in the steering main shaft bush.

28. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN UPPER W/SWITCH BRACKET ASSEMBLY
a. Temporarily install the steering column upper w/switch bracket assembly and steering column clamp upper with 2 new steering lock set bolts.
b. Tighten the 2 steering lock set bolts until the bolt heads break off.





29. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY
a. Install the steering column assembly from the front side, and install the steering column clamp to the instrumental reinforcement assembly.
b. Install the steering column assembly with the bolt.
Torque: 21 Nm (210 kgf-cm, 15 ft. lbs.)
c. Connect the connectors and wire harness clamps.





30. INSTALL STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY
a. Align the matchmarks on the main shaft assembly and steering intermediate shaft assembly.
b. Install the steering intermediate shaft assembly with the bolt.
Torque: 28 Nm (286 kgf-cm, 21 ft. lbs.)

NOTICE: Install the intermediate shaft assembly with the distinction paint facing the steering column assembly side.





31. CONNECT STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY
a. Align the matchmarks on the intermediate shaft and steering intermediate shaft assembly.
b. Connect the steering intermediate shaft assembly with the bolt.
Torque: 28 Nm (286 kgf-cm, 21 ft. lbs.)
32. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN HOLE COVER PLATE
a. Install the steering column hole cover plate with the clip.
33. INSTALL WINDSHIELD WIPER SWITCH ASSEMBLY
a. Install the windshield wiper switch assembly and connect the connector.
34. INSTALL HEADLAMP DIMMER SWITCH ASSEMBLY
a. Install the headlamp dimmer switch assembly and connect the connector.
35. PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD
36. INSTALL SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY





37. CONNECT FLOOR SHIFT PARKING LOCK CABLE ASSEMBLY (A/T TRANSAXLE)
a. With the key in the ACC position, connect the floor shift parking lock cable.
38. CHECK KEY INTERLOCK OPERATION
39. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN COVER





a. Install the steering column cover UPR.
b. Install the 2 bolts.
Torque: 21 Nm (210 kgf-cm, 15 ft. lbs.)





c. Install the steering column cover LWR with the 3 screws.
40. ADJUST SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY
41. INSTALL STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY
a. Align the matchmarks with the one on the steering wheel assembly and steering main shaft assembly.
b. Install the steering wheel assembly with the set nut.
Torque: 50 Nm (510 kgf-cm, 37 ft. lbs.)
c. Connect the connector.
42. INSTALL HORN BUTTON ASSEMBLY
43. INSPECT HORN BUTTON ASSEMBLY
44. INSPECT STEERING WHEEL CENTER POINT
45. INSPECT SRS WARNING LIGHT
