Transmission Replacement
AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE ASSEMBLY (ATM)
REPLACEMENT
NOTICE: When disconnecting the battery terminal, initialize the system(s) shown after the terminal is reconnected.
1. REMOVE HOOD SUB-ASSEMBLY
2. REMOVE ENGINE COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY NO.1
a. Remove the 2 nuts and engine cover.
3. REMOVE BATTERY
4. REMOVE BATTERY CARRIER
a. Remove the 4 bolts and battery carrier.
5. REMOVE AIR CLEANER ASSEMBLY
6. DISCONNECT TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE ASSEMBLY
a. Remove the nut from the control shaft lever.
b. Disconnect the control cable from the control shaft lever.
c. Remove the clip and disconnect the control cable from the control cable bracket.
7. DISCONNECT WIRE HARNESS
a. Remove the 2 bolts.
b. Disconnect the wire harness and wire harness bracket.
8. DISCONNECT CONNECTOR
a. Separate the 2 wire harness clamps from the oil filler tube.
b. Disconnect the transmission wire connector.
c. Disconnect the park/neutral position switch connector.
d. Disconnect the 2 speed sensor connectors.
9. REMOVE BREATHER PLUG HOSE
a. Remove the breather hose from the transmission oil filler tube sub-assembly and automatic transaxle.
10. REMOVE TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE CLAMP
a. Remove the bolt and transmission control cable support from the automatic transaxle.
11. REMOVE TRANSMISSION OIL FILLER TUBE SUB-ASSEMBLY
a. Remove the ATF level gauge.
b. Remove the bolt and oil filler tube.
c. Remove the O-ring from the oil filler tube.
12. REMOVE TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE BRACKET NO.1
a. Remove the 2 bolts and control cable bracket No.1.
13. REMOVE FRONT WHEELS
14. REMOVE ENGINE UNDER COVER RH
15. REMOVE ENGINE UNDER COVER LH
16. DRAIN AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE FLUID
a. Remove the drain plug and gasket, and drain the ATF.
b. Install a new gasket and the drain plug.
Torque: 49 Nm (500 kgf-cm, 36 ft. lbs.)
17. DISCONNECT OIL COOLER INLET TUBE NO.1
a. Disconnect the oil cooler inlet tube No.1.
18. DISCONNECT OIL COOLER OUTLET TUBE NO.1
a. Disconnect the oil cooler outlet tube No.1.
b. Remove the 2 bolts and separate the 2 clamps.
19. SUSPEND ENGINE ASSEMBLY
a. Install the No.1 and No.2 engine hangers in the correct direction.
Parts No.:
No.1 engine hanger: 12281-28010
No.2 engine hanger: 12282-28010
Bolts: 91512-61020
Torque: 38 Nm (387 kgf-cm, 28 ft. lbs.)
b. Attach the engine chain hoist to the engine hanger.
CAUTION: Do not attempt to hang the engine by hooking the chain to any other part.
20. REMOVE EXHAUST PIPE ASSEMBLY FRONT

23. REMOVE STARTER ASSEMBLY
a. Remove the nut and disconnect the starter wire.
b. Disconnect the connector.
c. Remove the 2 bolts and starter.
24. SUPPORT AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE ASSEMBLY
a. Support the automatic transaxle with a transmission jack.
25. SEPARATE ENGINE MOUNTING INSULATOR FR
a. Remove the bolt and nut from the engine mounting bracket FR.
b. Separate the engine mounting insulator from the engine mounting bracket FR.
26. REMOVE ENGINE MOUNTING INSULATOR RR
a. Separate the hose clamp from the engine mounting insulator RR.
b. Remove the bolt from the engine mounting bracket RR.
c. Remove the 3 nuts, bolt and engine mounting insulator RR from the suspension member.
27. REMOVE ENGINE MOUNTING MEMBER SUB-ASSEMBLY CENTER
a. Remove the 4 bolts and engine mounting member with the engine mounting insulator FR.
28. REMOVE ENGINE MOUNTING INSULATOR LH
a. Remove the 5 bolts, nut and engine mounting insulator LH.
29. REMOVE ENGINE MOUNTING BRACKET LH
a. Remove the 3 bolts and engine mounting bracket LH from the automatic transaxle.
30. REMOVE ENGINE MOUNTING BRACKET FR
a. Remove the 2 bolts and engine mounting bracket FR from the automatic transaxle.
31. REMOVE ENGINE MOUNTING BRACKET RR
a. Remove the 3 bolts and engine mounting bracket RR from the automatic transaxle.
32. REMOVE FLYWHEEL HOUSING UNDER COVER
a. Remove the flywheel housing under cover from the automatic transaxle.
33. REMOVE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE ASSEMBLY
a. Turn the crankshaft to remove the 6 bolts while holding the crankshaft pulley bolt with a wrench.
b. Remove the 7 bolts.
c. Separate and remove the automatic transaxle.
34. REMOVE TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH ASSEMBLY
35. INSPECT TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH ASSEMBLY
SST 09350-32014 (09351-32010, 09351-32020)
36. INSTALL TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH ASSEMBLY
a. Using vernier calipers, measure dimension "A" between the transaxle fitting part of the engine and the converter fitting part of the drive plate.
b. Set the key of the front oil pump drive gear to the top and put a mark on the housing.
c. Put a mark on the torque converter clutch so that its groove can be clearly indicated.
d. Match the 2 marks on the transaxle case and the torque converter clutch and fit the spline part of the input shaft to the spline part of the turbine runner.
e. Rotating the torque converter clutch, fit the spline part of the stator shaft with the spline part of the stator.
HINT: Rotate it about 180 degrees.
f. Rotating the torque converter clutch, match the 2 marks on the case and the torque converter clutch again and fit the key of the oil pump drive gear into the key way of the torque converter clutch.
NOTICE: When rotating the torque converter clutch, do not push it with excessive force.
g. Using vernier calipers and a straight edge, measure dimension B shown in the illustration and check that B is greater than A measured in step (a).
Standard: A + 1 mm (0.04 inch) or more
37. INSTALL AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE ASSEMBLY
a. Install the automatic transaxle to the engine with the 7 bolts.
Torque:
Bolt A: 64 Nm (653 kgf-cm, 47 ft. lbs.)
Bolt B: 46 Nm (470 kgf-cm, 34 ft. lbs.)
Bolt C: 44 Nm (449 kgf-cm, 32 ft. lbs.)
b. Install the 6 torque converter clutch mounting bolts.
Torque: 41 Nm (420 kgf-cm, 30 ft. lbs.)
HINT: First install the green colored bolt, and then the remaining 5 bolts.
38. INSTALL FLYWHEEL HOUSING UNDER COVER
a. Install the flywheel housing under cover to the automatic transaxle.
39. INSTALL ENGINE MOUNTING BRACKET RR
a. Install the engine mounting bracket RR to the automatic transaxle with the 3 bolts.
Torque: 64 Nm (653 kgf-cm, 47 ft. lbs.)
40. INSTALL ENGINE MOUNTING BRACKET FR
a. Install the engine mounting bracket FR to the automatic transaxle with the 2 bolts.
Torque: 64 Nm (653 kgf-cm, 47 ft. lbs.)
41. INSTALL ENGINE MOUNTING BRACKET LH
a. Install the engine mounting bracket LH to the automatic transaxle with the 3 bolts.
Torque: 64 Nm (653 kgf-cm, 47 ft. lbs.)
42. INSTALL ENGINE MOUNTING INSULATOR LH
a. Install the engine mounting insulator LH with the 5 bolts and nut.
Torque:
Bolt A: 52 Nm (530 kgf-cm, 38 ft. lbs.)
Nut B: 87 Nm (887 kgf-cm, 64 ft. lbs.)
43. INSTALL ENGINE MOUNTING MEMBER SUB-ASSEMBLY CENTER
a. Install the engine mounting member with the 4 bolts.
Torque:
Bolt A: 45 Nm (459 kgf-cm, 33 ft. lbs.)
Bolt B: 65 Nm (663 kgf-cm, 48 ft. lbs.)
44. INSTALL ENGINE MOUNTING INSULATOR RR
a. Install the engine mounting insulator RR to the engine mounting bracket RR with the bolt.
Torque: 87 Nm (887 kgf-cm, 64 ft. lbs.)
b. Tighten the 3 nuts and bolt.
Torque: 65 Nm (663 kgf-cm, 48 ft. lbs.)
45. INSTALL ENGINE MOUNTING INSULATOR FR
a. Install the engine mounting insulator FR to the engine mounting bracket FR with the bolt and nut.
Torque: 52 Nm (530 kgf-cm, 38 ft. lbs.)
46. INSTALL STARTER ASSEMBLY
a. Install the starter with the 2 bolts.
Torque: 64 Nm (653 kgf-cm, 47 ft. lbs.)
b. Connect the connector.
c. Install the starter wire with the nut.
Torque: 9.8 Nm (100 kgf-cm, 87 inch lbs.)
47. INSTALL FRONT DRIVE SHAFT ASSEMBLY LH

49. INSTALL EXHAUST PIPE ASSEMBLY FRONT
50. INSTALL ENGINE UNDER COVER LH
51. INSTALL ENGINE UNDER COVER RH
52. INSTALL FRONT WHEELS
Torque: 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.)
53. INSTALL OIL COOLER OUTLET TUBE NO.1
a. Tighten the oil cooler outlet tube No.1.
Torque: 34 Nm (347 kgf-cm, 25 ft. lbs.)
54. INSTALL OIL COOLER INLET TUBE NO.1
a. Tighten the oil cooler inlet tube No.1.
Torque: 34 Nm (347 kgf-cm, 25 ft. lbs.)
b. Install the 2 oil cooler tube clamps with the 2 bolts.
Torque:
Bolt A: 5.5 Nm (56 kgf-cm, 49 inch lbs.)
Bolt B: 12 Nm (122 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.)
55. INSTALL TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE BRACKET NO.1
a. Install the transmission control cable bracket No.1 to the automatic transaxle with the 2 bolts.
Torque: 12 Nm (122 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.)
56. INSTALL TRANSMISSION OIL FILLER TUBE SUB-ASSEMBLY
a. Coat a new O-ring with ATF, and install it to the oil filler tube.
b. Install the oil filler tube to the automatic transaxle with the bolt.
Torque: 5.5 Nm (56 kgf-cm, 49 inch lbs.)
c. Install the ATF level gauge.
57. INSTALL TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE CLAMP
a. Install the transmission control cable support to the automatic transaxle with the bolt.
Torque: 12 Nm (122 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.)
58. INSTALL BREATHER PLUG HOSE
a. Install the breather hose to the oil filler tube sub-assembly and automatic transaxle.
59. CONNECT CONNECTOR
a. Connect the 2 clamps to the oil filler tube.
b. Connect the transmission wire connector.
c. Connect the park/neutral position switch connector.
d. Connect the 2 speed sensor connectors.
60. INSTALL WIRE HARNESS
a. Install the wire harness and wire harness bracket with the 2 bolts.
Torque:
Bolt A: 5.0 Nm (51 kgf-cm, 44 inch lbs.)
Bolt B: 8.4 Nm (86 kgf-cm, 74 inch lbs.)
61. INSTALL TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE ASSEMBLY
a. Install the control cable and clip to the bracket.
b. Temporarily install the control cable to the control shaft lever with the nut.
62. INSTALL AIR CLEANER ASSEMBLY
Torque: 5.0 Nm (51 kgf-cm, 44 inch lbs.)
63. INSTALL BATTERY CARRIER
a. Install the battery carrier to the body with the 4 bolts.
Torque: 13 Nm (130 kgf-cm, 10 ft. lbs.)
64. INSTALL BATTERY
65. INSTALL ENGINE COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY NO.1
Torque: 7.0 Nm (71 kgf-cm, 62 inch lbs.)
66. INSTALL HOOD SUB-ASSEMBLY
Torque: 13 Nm (132 kgf-cm, 10 ft. lbs.)
67. INSPECT HOOD SUB-ASSEMBLY
68. ADJUST HOOD SUB-ASSEMBLY
69. ADD AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE FLUID
Fluid type: T-IV
Capacity: 3.5 liters (3.7 US qts. 3.1 Imp.qts.)
70. ADJUST SHIFT LEVER POSITION
71. INSPECT SHIFT LEVER POSITION
72. INSPECT AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE FLUID
