Steering Column: Service and Repair









STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY
OVERHAUL
1. OBSERVE RESTRAINT SYSTEMS SERVICE PRECAUTIONS
2. SEPARATE BATTERY NEGATIVE TERMINAL
3. PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD
4. REMOVE HORN BUTTON ASSEMBLY





5. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY
a. Remove the steering wheel assembly set nut.
b. Put matchmarks on the steering wheel assembly and main shaft assembly.
c. Using SST, remove the steering wheel assembly.
SST 09950-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05021)





6. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN COVER
a. Remove the 2 screws and steering column cover LWR and the steering column cover UPR.

HINT:
- Tilt the steering column assembly to the lowermost position when removing the steering column upper cover.
- Tilt it to the uppermost position when removing the steering column lower cover.

7. REMOVE SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY
8. REMOVE HEADLAMP DIMMER SWITCH ASSEMBLY
9. REMOVE WINDSHIELD WIPER SWITCH ASSEMBLY
10. REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL AIR BAG ASSEMBLY LOWER NO.1





11. REMOVE COLUMN HOLE COVER SILENCER SHEET
a. Turn back the floor carpet and remove the 2 clips and the column hole cover silencer sheet.





12. SEPARATE STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY NO.2
a. Put matchmarks on the steering intermediate shaft assembly No.2 and the steering intermediate shaft.
b. Remove bolt and separate the steering intermediate shaft assembly No.2 from the steering intermediate shaft.





13. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY
a. Disconnect the connectors and the wire harness clamps from the steering column assembly.
b. Remove the 3 bolts and the steering column assembly.





14. REMOVE STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY NO.2
a. Put matchmarks on the steering intermediate shaft assembly No.2 and steering main shaft assembly.
b. Remove the bolt and steering intermediate shaft assembly No.2.





15. REMOVE TRANSPONDER KEY AMPLIFIER
a. Widen the claw hung onto the upper bracket by approximately 1.0 mm (0.039 inch) using a screwdriver.
b. Pull the transponder key amplifier towards the rear of the vehicle with the claw open.

NOTICE: Do not use excessive force to prevent the case from being damaged.





16. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN UPPER W/ SWITCH BRACKET ASSEMBLY
a. Using a centering punch, mark the center of the 2 taperedhead bolts.
b. Using a 3 to 4 mm (0.12 to 0.16 inch) drill, drill a hole in the 2 bolt heads.
c. Using a screw extractor, remove the 2 bolts, steering column upper w/ switch bracket assembly and steering column clamp upper.





17. REMOVE STEERING MAIN SHAFT ASSEMBLY
a. Secure the steering column tube in a vise. Insert aluminum plates between the steering column tube and the vise to prevent damage.

NOTICE: Do not overtighten the vise.

b. Using a snap ring expander, remove the steering main shaft snap ring (outer side).





c. Using a brass bar and a hammer, remove the steering main shaft assembly and steering main shaft bearing.

NOTICE: Be careful not to drop the steering main shaft assembly.





d. Using a snap ring expander, remove the steering main shaft snap ring (inner side).





18. REMOVE IGNITION SWITCH LOCK CYLINDER ASSEMBLY
a. Place the ignition switch lock cylinder assembly in the ACC position.
b. Push down the stop pin with a screwdriver, and pull out the cylinder assembly.





19. REMOVE UNLOCK WARNING SWITCH ASSEMBLY
a. Separate the unlock warning switch assembly connector from the ignition or starter switch assembly.
b. Remove the unlock warning switch assembly by pushing up on the center part and disengaging the 2 claws.
c. Manual Transaxle: Remove the clamp from the steering column upper bracket assembly.





d. Automatic Transaxle: Disengage the secondary locking device.
e. Automatic Transaxle: Using a screwdriver, disengage the locking lug of terminals 3 and 4, and pull the terminals out from the unlock warning switch assembly connector rear side.
20. REMOVE KEY INTERLOCK SOLENOID (AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE)
a. Remove the 2 screws and key interlock solenoid from the steering column upper bracket assembly.
21. REMOVE IGNITION OR STARTER SWITCH ASSEMBLY
a. Remove the 2 screws and ignition or starter switch assembly from the steering column upper bracket assembly.
22. INSTALL IGNITION OR STARTER SWITCH ASSEMBLY
a. Install the ignition or starter switch assembly to the steering column upper bracket assembly with the 2 screws.
23. INSTALL KEY INTERLOCK SOLENOID (AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE)
a. Install the key interlock solenoid to the steering column upper bracket assembly with the 2 screws.





24. INSTALL UNLOCK WARNING SWITCH ASSEMBLY
a. Install the unlock warning switch assembly.
b. Automatic Transaxle: Connect terminals 3 and 4 of the unlock warning switch assembly connector.
c. Connect the unlock warning switch assembly connector to the ignition or starter switch assembly.





d. Manual Transaxle: Secure the unlock warning switch assembly wire harness to the steering column upper bracket assembly with a new clamp as shown in the illustration.

NOTICE: Do not overtighten the clamp when securing the wire harness as the wire harness could be cut.





e. Automatic Transaxle: Secure the unlock warning switch assembly wire harness to the steering column upper bracket assembly as shown in the illustration.
25. INSTALL IGNITION SWITCH LOCK CYLINDER ASSEMBLY
a. Make sure the ignition switch lock cylinder assembly is in the ACC position.
b. Install the ignition switch lock cylinder assembly.
26. INSPECT STEERING LOCK OPERATION
a. Check that the steering lock mechanism is activated when the key is removed.
b. Check that the steering lock mechanism is deactivated when the key is inserted and turned to the ACC position.

HINT: If there is any abnormality, replace the ignition switch lock cylinder assembly.

27. INSPECT STEERING COLUMN TUBE SUB-ASSEMBLY
a. Check that the steering column tube bearing rotates smoothly without looseness in the axial direction or any irregular noise.

HINT: Replace the steering column assembly if the bearing does not rotate as specified.





28. INSTALL STEERING MAIN SHAFT ASSEMBLY
a. Using a snap ring expander, install a new steering main shaft snap ring (inner side) to the steering main shaft assembly.
b. Install the steering main shaft assembly to the steering column tube.
c. Secure the steering column tube in a vise. Insert aluminum plates between the steering column tube and the vise to prevent damage.

NOTICE:
- Do not apply excessive force to the steering column tube bracket when holding the steering column tube in a vise.
- Do not drop the steering main shaft assembly.





d. Using a snap ring expander, install a new steering main shaft snap ring (outer side) to the steering main shaft assembly.





29. INSTALL STEERING MAIN SHAFT BEARING
a. Hold the steering column tube in a vise between aluminum plates.

NOTICE: Do not apply excessive force to the steering column tube bracket when holding the steering column tube in a vise.

b. Install a new steering main shaft bearing to the steering column tube using SST and a hammer.
SST 09612-22011





30. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN UPPER W/ SWITCH BRACKET ASSEMBLY
a. Temporarily install the steering column upper w/ switch bracket assembly and steering column upper clamp with 2 new taperedhead bolts.
b. Tighten the 2 taperedhead bolts until the bolt heads break off.





31. INSTALL TRANSPONDER KEY AMPLIFIER
a. Align the transponder key amplifier with the installation position of the upper bracket with the amplifier inclined.
b. Push on the transponder key amplifier and install it to the upper bracket.

NOTICE: Do not push the amplifier with excessive force.





32. INSTALL STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY NO.2
a. Align the matchmarks on the steering intermediate shaft assembly No.2 and the steering main shaft assembly and install them with bolt.
Torque: 35 Nm (360 kgf-cm, 26 ft. lbs.)





33. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY
a. Install the steering column assembly with the 3 bolts.
Torque: 21 Nm (214 kgf-cm, 15 ft. lbs.)
b. Connect each connector and clamp the wire harness to the steering column assembly bracket.





34. CONNECT STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY NO.2
a. Align the matchmarks on the steering intermediate shaft assembly No.2 and the steering intermediate shaft and install them with bolt.
Torque: 35 Nm (360 kgf-cm, 26 ft. lbs.)
35. PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD
36. INSTALL SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY
37. ADJUST SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY
38. INSTALL COLUMN HOLE COVER SILENCER SHEET
39. INSTALL INSTRUMENT PANEL AIR BAG ASSEMBLY LOWER NO.1
40. INSTALL WINDSHIELD WIPER SWITCH ASSEMBLY
41. INSTALL HEADLAMP DIMMER SWITCH ASSEMBLY
42. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN COVER
43. INSTALL STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY
a. Align the matchmarks on the steering wheel assembly and the steering main shaft assembly.
b. Install the steering wheel assembly with the set nut.
Torque: 50 Nm (510 kgf-cm, 37 ft. lbs.)
44. INSPECT STEERING WHEEL CENTER POINT
45. INSTALL HORN BUTTON ASSEMBLY
46. CONNECT BATTERY NEGATIVE TERMINAL
47. INSPECT HORN BUTTON ASSEMBLY
48. INSPECT SRS WARNING LIGHT
