Applicability

Introduction

Some 2005 - 2009 model year Scion tC vehicles may exhibit an SRS lamp "ON" condition with Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) B1821 and/or B1826. An updated wire harness is available to address this condition. Follow the procedures in this bulletin to replace the floor wire harness.

TSB Overview

After confirming the vehicle condition matches this bulletin, this TSB will direct the technician to replace the floor harness or floor harness No.2. In order to do this, it is necessary to first remove several major components, such as the front seats, headliner, carpet, and other interior components. This bulletin provides detailed instructions on the removal and installation of these components.

Inspection Procedure

1. Using TIS Techstream confirm that DTC B1821 and/or B1826 is present or in history.

2. Disconnect the negative (-) battery terminal.

3. Disconnect the corresponding airbag squib.

4. Reconnect the corresponding airbag squib.

5. Reconnect the negative (-) battery terminal.

6. Turn the engine switch (IG) ON and wait at LEAST 60 seconds.

7. Clear the DTCs stored in memory.

8. Turn the engine switch (IG) OFF.

9. Turn the engine switch (IG) ON and wait at LEAST 60 seconds.

10. Check for SRS DTCs.

A. If DTC B1821 and/or B1826 are present perform the diagnostic procedure for the applicable DTC per the Repair Manual.





Refer to the Technical Information System (TIS) applicable model year Repair Manual:





B. If DTC B1821 and/or B1826 are no longer present replace the corresponding floor wire harness.

1. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. (B, L, R)

CAUTION
Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to prevent airbag and seat belt pretensioner activation.

2. Remove the left and right front seats. (B, L, R)

2005 MY:

A. Remove the seat headrest.





B. Using a plastic pry tool (or equivalent) disengage the 2 claws and remove the seat track outer cover.





C. Using a plastic pry tool (or equivalent) disengage the 3 claws and remove the seat track inner cover.

D. Remove the 5 bolts from the seat track.

E. Disconnect the connectors under the seat and remove the seat.

3. Remove the left and right front seats. (B, L, R)

2006 - 2009 MY:

NOTE
Steps 4 - 12 are for 2005 MY Only.

4. Remove the rear seat. (B, L, R)

A. Remove the tonneau cover assembly.

B. Remove the deck board sub-assembly.

C. Remove the rear seat cushion assembly.

(1) Pull up on the 2 front portions of the seat cushion.

(2) Remove the inner belts through the slits on the seat cushion.

(3) Remove the 2 seat cushion hooks from the seatback frame.





(4) Remove the seat cushion.

5. Remove deck board No. 1. (B, L, R)





A. Using the plastic pry tool detach the 2 claws and remove the bolt and rope hook.

B. Using a plastic pry tool (or equivalent) detach the 4 clips and remove the deck board.





6. Remove the child restraint seat tether anchor covers.

For each child restraint seat tether anchor cover detach the 4 claws as indicated in Figure 7.

7. Remove the child restraint seat tether anchor brackets by removing the 3 bolts. (B, L, R)





8. Using a plastic pry tool (or equivalent) detach the clip and remove the rear floor board No.1.





9. Remove the rear seatback assembly LH. (B, L, R)

A. Fully fold the seatback forward.

B. Remove the 2 bolts on the rear side of the seatback.

C. Return the seatback to the upright position.

D. Remove the 2 bolts on the front side of the seatback. Then remove the seatback.

NOTICE

Be careful NOT to damage the vehicle body.

10. Remove the rear seatback assembly RH. (B, L, R)

A. Remove the bolt and rear seat 3-point type belt floor anchor.

B. Fully fold the seatback forward.

C. Remove the 2 bolts on the rear side of the seatback.

D. Return the seatback to the upright position.

E. Remove the 2 bolts on the front side of the seatback. Then remove the seatback.

NOTICE

Be careful NOT to damage the vehicle body.

11. Remove the rear seat cushion lock hook. (B, L, R)

Using the plastic pry tool detach the claws and remove the 2 lock hooks.

SST: 00002-06000-01

12. Remove the No.3 seat leg sub-assembly. (B, L, R)

A. Using a plastic pry tool (or equivalent) remove the 2 clips.

B. Partially remove the floor carpet and remove the 4 bolts and seat leg.

NOTE

Step 13 is for 2006 - 2009 MY Only.

13. Remove the rear seat. (B, L, R)

14. Remove the instrument panel sub-assembly upper. (B, L)

^ 2006 / 2007 / 2008 / 2009 Scion tC:

NOTE

Remaining removal steps are for ALL model years (2005 - 2009).

15. Remove the console panel sub-assembly upper FR. (B, L, R)

A. Turn the shift lever knob sub-assembly counterclockwise and remove the shift lever knob sub-assembly (manual transmission).

B. Using a plastic pry tool (or equivalent) disengage the 2 claws (A).

C. Disengage the 2 claws (B).





D. Disengage the 2 claws (C).

E. Disconnect the connector.





F. Remove the clamp and console panel sub-assembly UPR FR.

16. Remove the rear console box. (B, L, R)

A. Disconnect the connector.





B. Remove the console box carpet.





C. Manual transaxle: Remove the 2 screws (labeled 1 in Figure 13).

Automatic transaxle: Remove the 4 screws (labeled 1 and 2 in Figure 13).

D. Remove the 2 bolts.

E. Remove the clamp and console box assembly RR.

17. Unbolt the shifter assembly by removing the 4 bolts. (B, L, R)

NOTE

The shifter needs to be unbolted to access clips that retain the floor harness to the body.

18. Remove the headliner. (B, L, R)

19. Remove the fuel lid lock open lever sub-assembly.
(B, L, R)

A. Remove the screw.





B. Remove the cover in the direction indicated by the arrow mark in the illustration.

C. Remove the cable.

20. Remove the carpet. (B, L, R)

A. Detach the 2 clips and remove the front floor footrest.

B. Remove the XM receiver unit (if equipped).

C. Remove the 2 clips at the center console.

D. Remove the 2 clips under the rear seat.

E. Remove the carpet.

21. Remove the old floor harness. (B, L, R)





Disconnect each connector and note floor harness routing.

NOTE

^ Installation is in the reverse order of removal. Only key points are mentioned below.

^ Prior to reinstalling the headliner, ensure that the CSAB connectors are fully seated.

1. Install the NEW harness.

Install the new harness and ensure that the new harness is routed correctly and all the connectors are fully seated.

2. Reinstall the front seats.

^ 2005 - 2006 MY:

Torque: 40 N*m (408 kg*cm, 30 ft*lbf)

^ 2007 - 2009 MY:

3. Clear DTCs. Cycle the ignition and confirm DTCs do NOT recur.

4. Initialize power systems (windows moon roof etc.).
