Clockspring Assembly / Spiral Cable: Service and Repair
REPLACEMENT1. PRECAUTION
Refer to Air Bag Systems; Service Precautions.
2. DISCONNECT BATTERY NEGATIVE TERMINAL
CAUTION: After removing the terminal, wait for at least 90 seconds before starting the operation.
3. PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD
4. REMOVE HORN BUTTON ASSEMBLY
5. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY
SST 09950-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05021)
6. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN COVER (LOWER)
7. REMOVE SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY
a. Raise the steering column cover (upper).
b. Disconnect the connectors from the spiral cable sub-assembly.
CAUTION: When handling the airbag connector, take care not to damage the airbag wire harness.
c. Disengage the 3 claws and remove the spiral cable sub-assembly.
8. INSPECT SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY
a. If any of the following conditions occur, replace the spiral cable sub-assembly with a new one.
Condition:
Scratches or cracks on the connector
Cracks, dents or chipping of the spiral cable sub-assembly
9. INSTALL SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY
a. Check that the front wheels are facing straight ahead.
b. Set the turn signal switch to the neutral position.
NOTE: Make sure that the turn signal switch is in the neutral position or the pin of the turn signal switch may be snapped.
c. Install the spiral cable sub-assembly.
NOTE: When replacing the spiral cable sub-assembly with a new one, remove the lock pin before installing the steering wheel assembly.
d. Connect the connector to the spiral cable sub-assembly.
NOTE: When handling the airbag connector, take care not to damage the airbag wire harness.
10. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN COVER (LOWER)
11. ADJUST SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY
a. Check that the ignition switch is off.
b. Check that the battery negative (-) terminal is disconnected.
NOTE: After removing the terminal, wait for at least 90 seconds before starting the operation.
c. Rotate the spiral cable sub-assembly counterclockwise slowly by hand until it feels firm.
NOTE: Do not turn the spiral cable sub-assembly by the airbag wire harness.
d. Rotate the spiral cable sub-assembly clockwise approximately 2.5 turns to align the marks.
NOTE: Do not turn the spiral cable sub-assembly by the airbag wire harness.
HINT: The spiral cable sub-assembly will rotate approximately 2.5 turns to both the left and right from the center.
12. INSTALL STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY
13. INSPECT STEERING WHEEL CENTER POINT
14. INSTALL HORN BUTTON ASSEMBLY
15. CONNECT BATTERY NEGATIVE TERMINAL
When disconnecting the battery terminal, initialize the following systems after the terminal is reconnected.
- Power window control system
- Sliding roof system
16. INSPECT HORN BUTTON ASSEMBLY
17. INSPECT SRS WARNING LIGHT
