Body - Moonroof Ticking Noise On Rough Roads

MOON ROOF TICKING NOISE

Models:
'05 - '06 Scion tC

Introduction

Some customers may experience a ticking sound from the left rear roof area while driving on rough roads at low speeds. The following procedure has been developed to correct this condition.

Applicable Vehicle:
^ 2005 - 2006 model year Scion tC vehicles produced BEFORE the Production Change Effective VIN shown below.

Applicable Warranty:

This repair is covered under the Toyota Comprehensive Warranty. This warranty is in effect for 36 months or 36,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the vehicle's in-service date.

* Warranty application is limited to correction of a problem based upon a customer's specific complaint.

Repair Procedure

Refer to the Technical Information System (TIS), 2006 model year Scion tC Repair Manual: Sliding Roof: Sliding Roof Housing: Removal.

1. Disconnect the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal.

CAUTION:
Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to prevent airbag and seat belt pretensioner activation.

2. Remove the roof headliner assembly.

Refer to TIS, 2006 model year Scion tC Repair Manual: Interior: Roof Headlining: Removal.

NOTE:
After removing the headliner, connect the battery and sliding roof control switch.





3. Remove the sliding roof garnish LH.

A. Fully open the roof glass.

B. Using a T25 Torx driver, remove the screw and garnish.

4. Repeat step 3 to remove the sliding roof garnish RH.





5. Remove the No. 2 sliding roof glass sub-assembly.

A. Remove the two (2) screws.





B. Fully close the roof glass and remove the four (4) screws on the center and rear side of the glass. Then remove the roof glass.

C. After removing the roof glass, disconnect the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal and the sliding roof control switch.

NOTE:
Be careful whenever performing work between the roof and the glass frame if the battery cable and sliding roof control switch are connected and the jam protection function has NOT been initialized. The jam protection function may NOT operate normally.





6. Remove the No. 1 sliding roof glass sub-assembly.

A. Using a T25 Torx driver, remove the two (2) screws.





B. Remove the four (4) screws and the glass.





7. Remove the sunshade trim sub-assembly.

A. Remove the two (2) nuts.

B. Using a T25 Torx driver, remove the four (4) screws.

C. Slide the front side sunshade trim backward and remove it.

D. Slide the rear side sunshade trim forward and remove it.

8. Remove the sliding roof housing front mounting bracket LH by removing the two (2) bolts, two (2) nuts, and then the bracket.

9. Remove the sliding roof housing front mounting bracket RH by removing the two (2) bolts, two (2) nuts, and then the bracket.

10. Remove the sliding roof housing center mounting bracket LH by removing the two (2) bolts, two (2) nuts, and then the bracket.

11. Remove the sliding roof housing center mounting bracket RH by removing the two (2) bolts, two (2) nuts, and then the bracket.





12. Remove the room light switch by removing the two (2) bolts, one (1) nut, and bracket from the drive gear.

13. Remove the sliding roof drive gear assembly.

14. Remove the drive cable and drive cable guide casing by removing the twelve (12) nuts.

CAUTION:
Be careful NOT to twist or damage the drive cable and guide casing during removal.





15. Remove the sliding roof drive cable LH.

A. Using the T25 Torx driver, remove the two (2) screws.

B. Remove the two (2) screws.

C. Disconnect the drive cable from the lift guide. Slide the drive cable toward the rear of the vehicle and remove it.

CAUTION:
When removing the drive cable, be careful NOT to damage the side airbag, wire harness, and other nearby parts.

16. Repeat step 15 to remove the sliding roof drive cable RH.

17. Remove the sliding roof cable guide casing.





18. Remove the sliding roof lift guide LH.

A. Slide the lift guide forward and remove it.





B. Disconnect the cable case connector from the lift guide as shown in the illustration.

19. Repeat step 18 to remove the sliding roof lift guide RH.

20. Remove the windshield molding outside.

HINT:
^ The roof panel cannot be removed/replaced by itself because the windshield glass and roof panel are built into the molding. First, the molding must be lifted, and then the roof panel can be replaced.

^ Using a plastic pry tool, lift the top windshield molding from the rear edge. Then, the roof panel can be lifted out.

21. Remove the sliding roof housing sub-assembly by removing the sixteen (16) nuts and panel.

CAUTION:
When removing the panel, be careful NOT to damage the vehicle. Perform this step with two (2) or more people.





22. Apply a 1 mm (0.04 in.) thick felt pad as shown in the illustration.

23. Reassemble in reverse order of disassembly.

NOTE:
Align the sliding roof cable position LH and RH.

24. Re-initialize power systems.

Refer to the following TSBs to re-initialize the power systems:

^ For 2005 model year: TSB No. PD008-05, Power System Initialization During PDS."

^ For 2006 model year: TSB No. PD014-06, Power System Initialization During PDS."
