Steering Column: Service and Repair

STEERING COLUMN ASSY
OVERHAUL
1. PRECAUTION
2. DISCONNECT BATTERY NEGATIVE TERMINAL
3. INSPECT PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD
4. REMOVE HORN BUTTON ASSY





5. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL ASSY
a. Disconnect the connector.
b. Remove the steering wheel assy set nut.
c. Put matchmarks on the steering wheel assy and main shaft assy.
d. Using SST, remove the steering wheel assy.
SST 09950-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05021)
6. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN COVER





a. Remove the 3 screws and steering column cover LWR.





b. Remove the 2 bolts and steering column cover UPR.





7. DISCONNECT FLOOR SHIFT PARKING LOCK CABLE ASSY (A/T TRANSAXLE)
a. With the key in the ACC position, disengage the claw and pull out the floor shift parking lock cable.
8. REMOVE SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSY
9. REMOVE HEADLAMP DIMMER SWITCH ASSY
a. Disconnect the connector and remove the headlamp dimmer switch assy.
10. REMOVE WINDSHIELD WIPER SWITCH ASSY
a. Disconnect the connector and remove the windshield wiper switch assy.
11. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN HOLE COVER PLATE





12. DISCONNECT STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSY
a. Put matchmarks on the steering intermediate shaft assy and steering intermediate shaft.
b. Remove the bolt, and then disconnect the steering intermediate shaft assy.





13. REMOVE STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSY
a. Put matchmarks on the steering intermediate shaft assy and main shaft assy.
b. Remove the bolt and steering intermediate shaft assy.





14. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN ASSY
a. Disconnect the connectors and wire harness clamps from the steering column assy.
b. Remove the bolt and steering column assy.





15. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN UPPER W/SWITCH BRACKET ASSY
a. Using a centering punch, mark the center of the 2 tapered-head bolts.
b. Using a 3 to 4 mm (0.12 to 0.16 inch) drill, drill into the 2 bolts.
c. Using a screw extractor, remove the 2 bolts and steering column upper w/switch bracket assy.
16. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN CLAMP UPPER
17. REMOVE STEERING MAIN SHAFT BUSH
a. Using a screw driver, remove the steering main shaft bush from the steering column assy.
18. REMOVE STEERING MAIN SHAFT ASSY





a. Using a snap ring expander, remove the steering main shaft snap ring (outer side).





b. Using a brass bar and a hammer, remove the steering main shaft assy and steering main shaft bearing.

NOTICE: Be careful not to drop the steering main shaft assy.





c. Using a snap ring expander, remove the steering main shaft snap ring (inner side).





19. REMOVE IGNITION SWITCH LOCK CYLINDER ASSY
a. Place the ignition switch lock cylinder assy in the ACC position.
b. Push down the stop pin with a screwdriver, and pull out the cylinder assy.





20. REMOVE UN-LOCK WARNING SWITCH ASSY
a. Disconnect the un-lock warning switch assy connector from the ignition or starter switch assy.
b. Remove the un-lock warning switch assy.
21. REMOVE IGNITION OR STARTER SWITCH ASSY
a. Remove the 2 screws and ignition or starter switch assy from the steering column bracket assy.
22. INSTALL IGNITION OR STARTER SWITCH ASSY
a. Install the ignition or starter switch assy to the steering column bracket assy with the 2 screws.
23. INSTALL UN-LOCK WARNING SWITCH ASSY





a. Install the un-lock warning switch assy.
b. Connect the un-lock warning switch assy connector to the ignition or starter switch assy.





c. Using a new clamp, fix the wire harness of the unlock warning switch assy to the steering column bracket assy UPR as shown in the illustration.

NOTICE: When fixing the wire harness, do not tighten the clamp too hard. It could damage inside the wire harness.

24. INSTALL IGNITION SWITCH LOCK CYLINDER ASSY
a. Make sure that the ignition switch lock cylinder assy is in the ACC position.
b. Install the ignition switch lock cylinder assy.
25. INSPECT STEERING LOCK OPERATION
a. Check that the steering lock mechanism is activated when removing the key.
b. Check that the steering lock mechanism is deactivated when inserting the key and turning it to the ACC position.
26. INSPECT STEERING COLUMN TUBE SUB-ASSY
a. Check the condition of the steering column tube bearing rotation and check for abnormal noise.
If the hearing in worn or damaged, replace the steering column assy.
27. INSTALL STEERING MAIN SHAFT ASSY





a. Using a snap ring expander, install a new steering main shaft snap ring (inner side) to the steering main shaft assy.
b. Install the steering main shaft assy to the steering column tube.





c. Using a snap ring expander, install a new steering main shaft snap ring (outer side) to the steering main shaft assy.





28. INSTALL STEERING MAIN SHAFT BUSH
a. Using SST and a hammer, install a new steering main shaft bearing.
SST 09612-22011





29. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN UPPER W/SWITCH BRACKET ASSY
a. Temporarily install the steering column upper w/switch bracket assy and steering column upper clamp with 2 new tapered-head bolts.
b. Tighten the 2 tapered-head bolts until the bolt heads break off.





30. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN ASSY
a. Insert the steering column assy from the front side, and install the steering column clamp to the instrumental reinforcement assy.
b. Install the steering column assy with the bolt.
Torque: 21 Nm (210 kgf-cm, 15 ft. lbs.)
c. Connect the connectors and wire harness clamps.





31. INSTALL STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSY
a. Align the matchmarks on the intermediate shaft assy and main shaft assy.
b. Install the steering intermediate shaft assy with the bolt.
Torque: 28 Nm (286 kgf-cm, 21 ft. lbs.)

NOTICE: Install the intermediate shaft assy with the distinction paint facing the steering column assy side.





32. CONNECT STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSY
a. Align the matchmarks on the steering intermediate shaft assy and steering intermediate shaft.
b. Connect the steering intermediate shaft assy with the bolt.
Torque: 28 Nm (286 kgf-cm, 21 ft. lbs.)
33. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN HOLE COVER PLATE
34. INSTALL WINDSHIELD WIPER SWITCH ASSY
a. Install the windshield wiper switch assy and connect the connector.
35. INSTALL HEADLAMP DIMMER SWITCH ASSY
a. Install the headlamp dimmer switch assy and connect the connector.
36. PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD
37. INSTALL SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSY
38. CONNECT FLOOR SHIFT PARKING LOCK CABLE ASSY (A/T TRANSAXLE)
39. CONNECT CHECK KEY INTERLOCK OPERATION
40. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN COVER





a. Install the steering column cover UPR with the 2 bolts.
Torque: 21 Nm (210 kgf-cm, 15 ft. lbs.)





b. Install the steering column cover LWR with the 3 screws.
41. ADJUST SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSY
42. INSTALL STEERING WHEEL ASSY
a. Align the matchmark with the one on the steering wheel assy and steering main shaft assy.
b. Install the steering wheel assy with the set nut.
Torque: 50 Nm (510 kgf-cm, 37 ft. lbs.)
c. Connect the connector.
43. INSPECT HORN BUTTON ASSY
44. INSTALL HORN BUTTON ASSY
45. STEERING WHEEL CENTER POINT
46. PERFORM VSC SYSTEM CALIBRATION
47. INSPECT SRS WARNING LIGHT
