Wheel Drive Shaft Inner Joint and Boot Replacement (Tripod)

Special Tools
* J 22610 Keystone Clamp Pliers
* MKM-804 Tensioner

Removal Procedure

Note:
* U18 XE petrol engine combined with AF17 automatic transmission; it is not possible to replace the boot on the transmission side, right axle shaft with mass damper. A new half shaft, inner joint assembly with shaft and without outer joint, must be used. The constant velocity joint on the wheel side must be removed during this process.
* Tripod joints cannot be detached. To replace the boot on the transmission side, it is necessary to remove the constant velocity joint on the wheel side.

1. Remove the axle shaft. Refer to Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement (Service and Repair).
2. Mark the position of the boot at the axle shaft side.
3. Remove the boot clamps for the boot on the transmission side (1).




4. Cut open the boot on axle shaft and remove.




5. Remove the boot clamps for the boot on the wheel side (1).
Mark the position of the boot at the axle shaft side.




6. Pull the boot (1) on the transmission side of the axle shaft joint off over the axle shaft, arrow.

Installation Procedure

1. Prepare the axle shaft joint on the transmission side

* Wash out the joint.
* Fill cavities in the joint with special grease.

2. Attach the new boot on the transmission side.
Slide on the new boot up to mark on transmission side.
3. Attach the new boot clamps with J 22610 .
4. Push the boot onto the axle shaft on the wheel side.
5. Drive the joint onto the axle shaft with a rubber hammer until the retaining ring engages on the axle shaft.





Note: The boot must sit in the groove in the joint.

6. Slide the boot (1) into the joint.
7. Install the boot clamps on the wheel side and tighten manually with MKM-804 (I).





Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution (Fastener Caution).

8. Tighten the boot clamps with the torque wrench and MKM-804 (II) and (III) to 25 Nm (18 lb ft).
9. Install the axle shaft. Refer to Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement (Service and Repair).
