33. Camshaft Cleaning and Inspection




Camshaft Cleaning and Inspection

Special Tools
* KM-845 - Suction Device
* KM-6361 - Feeler Gage Set

For equivalent regional tools, refer to Special Tools (Tools and Equipment).

Note: Note the identification marking on the camshaft bearing cover.

1. Install the exhaust camshaft.

Coat the exhaust camshaft with MoS 2 lubricating paste.

Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution (Fastener Caution).

2. Tighten the camshaft bearing caps 2-5 in a spiral from the inside to the outside. Tighten the camshaft bearing caps to 8 Nm (71 lb in).
3. Install the camshaft bearing cover.

Note:
* If none of the camshafts were replaced, continue at Step 6 of Camshaft Installation. Refer to Camshaft Installation (Overhaul).
* Note the identification marking on the camshaft bearing cover.

4. Install the intake camshaft.

Coat the intake camshaft with MoS 2 lubricating paste.

5. Tighten the camshaft bearing caps 2-5 in a spiral from the inside to the outside. Tighten the camshaft bearing caps to 8 Nm (71 lb in).
6. Install the camshaft bearing cover.
7. Install the 1st camshaft bearing support and bolts. Tighten the 4 bolts to 8 Nm (71 lb in).

Note: It is not necessary to replace the sealing sleeve and bolt when inspecting the valve lash.

8. Install the intake camshaft adjuster and bolt.

Note: It is not necessary to replace the sealing sleeve and bolt when inspecting the valve lash.

9. Install the exhaust camshaft adjuster and bolt.
10. Tighten the intake camshaft adjuster and tighten to 65 Nm (48 lb ft).
Counter-hold at camshaft hexagon.
11. Tighten the exhaust camshaft adjuster and tighten to 65 Nm (48 lb ft).
Counter-hold at camshaft hexagon.
12. When replacing the intake camshaft, inspect the valve lash of the intake valves.
13. Inspect the 2 valve lash, intake valve cylinder 1.

1. Turn the intake camshaft in the direction of engine rotation by the bolt of the drive gear until the cams of cylinder 1 are in the test position.
2. Using the KM-6361 - set , inspect the valve lash.
Write down the result.

14. Inspect the 2 valve lash, intake valve cylinder 3.

1. Turn the intake camshaft in the direction of engine rotation by the bolt of the drive gear until the cams of cylinder 3 are in the test position.
2. Using the KM-6361 - set , inspect the valve lash.
Write down the result.

15. Inspect the 2 valve lash, intake valve cylinder 4.

1. Turn the intake camshaft in the direction of engine rotation by the bolt of the drive gear until the cams of cylinder 4 are in the test position.
2. Using the KM-6361 - set , inspect the valve lash.
Write down the result.

16. Inspect the 2 valve lash, intake valve cylinder 2.

1. Turn the intake camshaft in the direction of engine rotation by the bolt of the drive gear until the cams of cylinder 2 are in the test position.
2. Using the KM-6361 - set , inspect the valve lash.
Write down the result.

17. When replacing the exhaust camshaft, inspect the valve lash of the exhaust valves.
18. Inspect the 2 valve lash, exhaust valve cylinder 4.

1. Turn the exhaust camshaft in the direction of engine rotation by the bolt of the drive gear until the cams of cylinder 4 are in the test position.
2. Using the KM-6361 - set , inspect the valve lash.
Write down the result.

19. Inspect the 2 valve lash, exhaust valve cylinder 2.

1. Turn the exhaust camshaft in the direction of engine rotation by the bolt of the drive gear until the cams of cylinder 2 are in the test position.
2. Using the KM-6361 - set , inspect the valve lash.
Write down the result.

20. Inspect the 2 valve lash, exhaust valve cylinder 1.

1. Turn the exhaust camshaft in the direction of engine rotation by the bolt of the drive gear until the cams of cylinder 1 are in the test position.
2. Using the KM-6361 - set , inspect the valve lash.
Write down the result.

21. Inspect the 2 valve lash, exhaust valve cylinder 3.

1. Turn the exhaust camshaft in the direction of engine rotation by the bolt of the drive gear until the cams of cylinder 3 are in the test position.
2. Using the KM-6361 - set , inspect the valve lash.
Write down the result.

22. Remove the exhaust camshaft adjuster bolt.
23. Counter-hold at the exhaust camshaft hexagon.
24. Remove the exhaust camshaft adjuster.
25. Remove the intake camshaft adjuster bolt.
26. Counter-hold at hexagon of the intake camshaft.
27. Remove the intake camshaft adjuster.
28. Remove the 4 1st camshaft bearing support bolts.
29. Remove the 1st camshaft bearing support.

Note: Mark the camshaft bearing caps before removing them.

30. Detach the camshaft bearing caps 2-5 working from outside to inside in a spiral in steps of 1/2 up to 1 turn.
31. Remove the camshaft bearing cover from the cylinder head.
32. Remove the intake camshaft.

Note: Mark the camshaft bearing caps before removing them.

33. Detach the camshaft bearing caps 2-5 working from outside to inside in a spiral in steps of 1/2 up to 1 turn.
34. Remove the camshaft bearing cover from the cylinder head.
35. Remove the exhaust camshaft.




36. Using the KM-845 - Suction Device (1), remove the 16 cup tappets.




37. Determine cup tappet size.

1. Measurement of the cup tappet installed 3.12 mm (0.123 in), identification number 12
2. Measured value between cams and cup tappets +0.31 mm (0.012 in) = 3.43 mm (0.135 in)
3. Required value, valve lash - 0.25 mm (0.011 in)

Note: The identification number, arrow, is on the inside of the cup tappet.

4. Measurement of the new cup tappet = 3.18 mm (0.125 in), identification number 18
5. Use a cup tappet with this dimension or one that is nearest to it.
