Alternator: Service and Repair
GENERATOR REPLACEMENT
REMOVAL PROCEDURE
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
CAUTION: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Service Precautions.
IMPORTANT: Record all pre-set radio stations.
2. Remove the accessory drive belt.
3. Remove the 2 belt tensioner to engine block bolts and the tensioner.
IMPORTANT: The exhaust system remains hot for extended periods of time.
4. Remove the upper generator to engine to block bolts.
5. Raise the vehicle on a hoist.
CAUTION: Refer to Vehicle Lifting Caution in Service Precautions.
6. Turn the steering wheel into a right turn for access to the lower generator bolt.
7. Remove the lower generator bolt.
8. Lower the vehicle.
9. Separate the generator from the engine block.
10. Disconnect the 2 generator electrical connectors and remove the generator.
INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
1. Lower the generator into the engine compartment and connect the generator electrical connections.
NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
Tighten the B+ cable to generator nut to 16 Nm (12 lb ft).
2. Guide the generator into the engine block with the upper mounting bolt positioned in the generator mounting hole.
3. Position the generator and install the upper mounting bolts and finger tighten.
4. Raise the vehicle on a hoist. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
5. Install the lower generator mounting bolts.
6. Lower the vehicle.
7. Tighten the upper generator mounting bolts.
Tighten the generator mounting bolts to 40 Nm (30 lb ft).
8. Install the belt tensioner to the engine block.
Tighten the belt tensioner bolts to 40 Nm (30 lb ft).
9. Install the accessory drive belt.
10. Connect the negative battery cable.
Tighten the battery terminal bolts to 17 Nm (13 lb ft).
11. Reprogram the radio stations.
