Instrument Panel (I/P) Retainer Replacement
Removal Procedure
Caution: Refer to SIR Inflator Module Handling and Storage Caution in Cautions and Notices.
Caution: A deployed dual stage inflator module will look the same whether one or both stages were used. Always assume a deployed dual stage inflator module has an active stage 2. Improper handling or servicing can activate the inflator module and cause personal injury.
Caution: Refer to SIR Caution in Cautions and Notices.
1. Disable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling Zone 3 and to SIR Disabling and Enabling Zone 5 in SIR.
2. Remove the body control module. Refer to Body Control Module Replacement in Body Control System.
3. Pull back the carpet at the bottom of the left center support bracket and remove the left center support bracket lower nuts.
4. Remove the center support bracket nuts and remove the bracket.
5. Remove the defroster grille. Refer to Defroster Grille Replacement (Instrument Panel (IP) - Defroster Grille Replacement) .
6. Open the instrument panel (I/P) compartment.
7. Remove the I/P compartment screws.
8. Pull out on the I/P compartment in order to remove.
9. Remove the right I/P trim panel screws.
10. Pull up on the right I/P trim panel in order to remove.
11. Remove the steering column filler panel screws.
12. Pull out on the filler panel in order to release the retaining fasteners.
13. Disconnect the rear compartment release switch electrical connector.
14. Remove the I/P lower compartment screws and remove the compartment.
15. Unsnap and remove the upper steering column cover.
16. Remove the lower steering column cover screws.
17. Lower the steering column adjusting handle.
18. Unsnap and remove the left lower steering column cover.
19. Remove the right lower steering column cover.
20. Remove the left I/P trim panel screws.
21. Pull up on the I/P trim panel in order to release the retaining fasteners.
22. Disconnect the I/P dimmer switch electrical connector.
23. If equipped, disconnect the fog lamp switch connector.
24. Remove the cluster screws.
25. Pull the cluster out and disconnect the electrical connector.
26. Remove the cluster from the vehicle.
27. Remove the I/P center trim panel screws and the I/P center trim panel.
28. Remove the screws from the radio and pull the radio out.
29. Disconnect the radio electrical connectors and remove the radio.
30. Disconnect the mode and temperature cables from the HVAC control assembly.
31. Disconnect the HVAC control assembly electrical connectors.
32. Remove the HVAC control assembly screws and remove the HVAC control assembly.
33. Remove the center air outlet duct screws and the duct.
34. Remove the accessory switch wire harness rosebuds from the I/P retainer.
35. Remove the left outer air outlet duct screws and the duct.
36. Remove the right outer air outlet duct screws and the duct.
37. Remove the defroster duct screw.
38. Remove the I/P inflatable restraint wire rosebuds from the I/P retainer bracket.
39. Remove the I/P inflatable restraint module bolts.
40. Pull the I/P inflatable restraint module out of the I/P retainer while depressing one of the retaining tabs on the I/P retainer with a flat-bladed tool.
41. Unsnap the DLC connector from the I/P retainer.
42. Remove the left and right front carpet retainer. Refer to Carpet Retainer Replacement - Front (Carpet Retainer Replacement - Front) in Interior Trim.
43. Position the steering column to the highest position and remove the rear steering column bolts.
44. Remove the I/P retainer to I/P carrier nut facing forward in vehicle on the lower right side of the I/P retainer.
45. Remove the remaining I/P retainer fasteners.
46. Remove the I/P retainer by sliding the I/P retainer along the steering column support bracket and toward the right side of the vehicle until it clears the steering wheel.
Installation Procedure
Important: Do not bend the HVAC control cable when installing the I/P retainer.
1. Install the I/P retainer into the right side of the vehicle. Lift the I/P retainer above the steering wheel and slide it down along the steering column support bracket.
2. Feed the HVAC control cables and I/P harness connectors through the center of the I/P retainer. Align the I/P retainer with the studs on the I/P carrier beam and slide the I/P retainer into position.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Cautions and Notices.
3. Install the I/P retainer nuts.
Tighten the I/P retainer nuts to 10 N.m (88 lb in).
4. Install the I/P retainer bolts.
Tighten the I/P retainer bolts to 10 N.m (88 lb in).
5. Install the I/P retainer screws.
Tighten the I/P retainer screws to 2.5 N.m (22 lb in).
6. Install the I/P retainer to I/P carrier nut facing forward in vehicle on the lower right side of the I/P retainer.
Tighten the I/P retainer to beam nut to 10 N.m (88 lb in).
7. Raise the steering column into position and install the rear steering column bolts.
Tighten the rear steering column bolts to 25 N.m (18 lb ft).
8. Install the left and right front carpet retainer. Refer to Carpet Retainer Replacement - Front (Carpet Retainer Replacement - Front) in Interior Trim.
9. Snap the DLC connector into the I/P retainer.
10. Install the I/P inflatable restraint module into the I/P retainer.
11. Install the I/P inflatable restraint module bolts.
Tighten the I/P inflatable restraint module bolts to 10 N.m (88 lb in).
12. Install the I/P inflatable restraint module wire rosebuds to the I/P retainer bracket.
13. Install the defroster duct screw.
Tighten the defroster duct screw to 2.5 N.m (22 lb in).
14. Install the left outer air outlet duct and screw.
Tighten the outer air outlet duct screw to 2.5 N.m (22 lb in).
15. Install the right outer air outlet duct and screw.
Tighten the outer air outlet duct screw to 2.5 N.m (22 lb in).
16. Install the accessory switch wire harness rosebuds to the I/P retainer.
17. Install the center air outlet duct and screws.
Tighten the center air outlet duct screws to 2.5 N.m (22 lb in).
18. Install the HVAC control assembly and screws.
Tighten the HVAC control screws to 2.5 N.m (22 lb in).
19. Connect the mode and temperature cables to the HVAC control assembly.
20. Connect the HVAC control assembly electrical connectors.
21. Place the radio in the vehicle and connect the radio electrical connectors.
22. Push the radio into position and install the screws.
Tighten the radio screws to 2.5 N.m (22 lb in).
23. Install the I/P center trim panel and screws.
Tighten the I/P center trim panel screws to 2.5 N.m (22 lb in).
24. Position the cluster in the vehicle and connect the cluster electrical connector.
25. Install the cluster screws
Tighten the cluster screws to 2.5 N.m (22 lb in).
26. Place the left I/P trim panel in the vehicle.
27. Connect the I/P dimmer switch electrical connector.
28. If equipped, connect the fog lamp switch connector.
29. Align the I/P trim panel retaining fasteners with the I/P.
30. Push the I/P trim panel in order to secure the retaining fasteners.
31. Install the I/P trim panel screws.
Tighten the I/P trim panel screws to 2.5 N.m (22 lb in).
32. Install the right lower steering column cover.
33. Install the left lower steering column cover and snap into the right cover.
34. Raise the steering column adjusting handle to lock the steering column into place.
35. Install the lower steering column cover screws.
Tighten the lower steering column cover screws to 2 N.m (17 lb in).
36. Install the upper steering column cover by guiding the soft closeout under the I/P trim panel and aligning the retaining fasteners with the lower covers.
37. Push on the upper steering column cover to secure.
38. Install the I/P lower compartment and screws.
Tighten the I/P lower compartment screws to 2.5 N.m (22 lb in).
39. Place the steering column filler panel in the vehicle and connect the rear compartment release switch electrical connector.
40. Align the retaining fasteners with the I/P.
41. Push the filler panel in order to secure.
42. Install the filler panel screws.
Tighten the filler panel screws to 2.5 N.m (22 lb in).
43. Verify that the retaining clips are installed on the right I/P trim panel and that there are no clips remaining in the I/P center trim panel.
44. Place the right I/P trim panel in the vehicle and align the I/P trim panel locating pins and the retaining clips with the I/P. Push on the I/P trim panel in order to secure.
45. Install the I/P trim panel screws.
Tighten the I/P trim panel screws to 2.5 N.m (22 lb in).
46. Place the I/P compartment in the vehicle and align the I/P compartment locating pins with the I/P.
47. Push the I/P compartment in order to secure.
48. Install the I/P compartment screws.
Tighten the I/P compartment screws to 2.5 N.m (22 lb in).
49. Install the defroster grille. Refer to Defroster Grille Replacement (Instrument Panel (IP) - Defroster Grille Replacement) .
50. Pull back the carpet and position the left center support bracket into position.
51. Install the center support bracket nuts.
Tighten the center support bracket nuts to 10 N.m (88 lb in).
52. Install the body control module. Refer to Body Control Module Replacement in Body Control Systems.
53. Enable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling Zone 3 and to SIR Disabling and Enabling Zone 5 in SIR.
