Roll Connector (Coil Assembly)

ROLL CONNECTOR (COIL ASSEMBLY)

TOOLS REQUIRED
^ J1859A Steering Wheel Puller Bridge
^ J42578 Steering Wheel Puller Legs

CAUTION:
^ SAFETY PRECAUTIONS MUST BE FOLLOWED WHEN HANDLING A DEPLOYED INFLATOR MODULE (AIR BAG). AFTER DEPLOYMENT, THE INFLATOR MODULE (AIR BAG) SURFACE MAY CONTAIN A SMALL AMOUNT OF SODIUM HYDROXIDE, A BY-PRODUCT OF THE DEPLOYMENT REACTION, THAT IS IRRITATING TO THE SKIN AND EYES. MOST OF THE POWDER ON THE INFLATOR MODULE (AIR BAG) IS HARMLESS. AS A PRECAUTION, WEAR GLOVES AND SAFETY GLASSES WHEN HANDLING A DEPLOYED INFLATOR MODULE (AIR BAG), AND WASH YOUR HANDS WITH MILD SOAP AND WATER AFTERWARDS.
^ WHEN YOU ARE CARRYING AN UNDEPLOYED INFLATOR MODULE:
^ DO NOT CARRY THE INFLATOR MODULE BY THE WIRES OR CONNECTOR ON THE INFLATOR MODULE.
^ MAKE SURE THE BAG OPENING POINTS AWAY FROM YOU.

WHEN YOU ARE STORING AN UNDEPLOYED INFLATOR MODULE, MAKE SURE THE BAG OPENING POINTS AWAY FROM THE SURFACE ON WHICH THE INFLATOR MODULE RESTS. WHEN YOU ARE STORING A STEERING COLUMN, DO NOT REST THE COLUMN WITH THE BAG OPENING FACING DOWN AND THE COLUMN VERTICAL. PROVIDE FREE SPACE FOR THE AIR BAG TO EXPAND IN CASE OF AN ACCIDENTAL DEPLOYMENT. OTHERWISE, PERSONAL INJURY MAY RESULT.

IMPORTANT: In the event deployment has occurred, refer to "Repairs and Inspections Required After an Accident". Repairs and Inspections Required After a Collision

REPOSITIONING ROLL CONNECTOR

NOTE: If roll connector is not properly oriented to steering column assembly, the coil will be damaged.

IMPORTANT: If yellow tab is inadvertently removed during installation or removal and coil hub has been rotated, roll connector must be repositioned.

1. Gently rotate coil hub clockwise with tab removed until slight tension is present.
2. Gently rotate coil hub counterclockwise(count approximately five revolutions) until slight tension is present.
3. Gently rotate coil hub clockwise one half of the number of revolutions counted in step 2 (approximately 2.5 times).
4. Rotate smallest distance required to align yellow tab.
5. Install yellow tab. Use tape if tab is unavailable.

REMOVAL
1. Position vehicle with front wheels pointed straight ahead and steering wheel centered.

NOTE: Always align the front wheels to the straight ahead position when removing or installing a roll connector.

If a roll connector is removed without the wheels in the straight ahead position, the same roll connector may be installed if the steering shaft and coil hub have not rotated.

2. Disable the SIR system.

3. Remove driver inflator module.
4. Disconnect cruise control (if equipped) switch connectors and disconnect harness from steering wheel.

5. Remove steering wheel attachment nut and discard.

6. Install Steering Wheel Puller

Steering Wheel Puller Bridge J1859A and Steering Wheel Puller Legs J42578 (or equivalent).

If a roll connector is removed without the wheels in the straight ahead position, the same roll connector may be installed if the steering shaft and coil hub have not rotated.

7. Remove steering wheel while feeding wiring through wheel opening.
8. Insert yellow tab or use a piece of tape to prevent roll connector from rotating.

9. Remove upper steering column cover, and lower steering column cover attachment.

10. Remove ignition switch bezel and remove lower cover.

11. Remove roll connector rosebud-type fastener from bracket below steering column.
12. Disconnect horn/cruise connector under steering column.
13. Remove roll connector by carefully prying the plastic retainers.
14. Guide roll connector wiring harness from behind lever control switch and remove roll connector.

INSTALLATION

NOTE: A new roll connector is equipped with a yellow tab that is removed after steering wheel is installed. This tab passes through the steering wheel.

1. Route SIR wiring harness and horn/cruise connector behind turn signal lever combination switch and down steering column.
2. Install roll connector to turn signal lever combination switch housing.

3. Install upper and lower steering column trim covers.

Torque:
Steering Column Cover Fasteners: 4 N.m (35 in-lbs)

4. Install ignition switch bezel.

5. Remove yellow tab or tape from roll connector.
6. Route wiring through steering wheel and install steering wheel onto steering shaft noting orientation notch that locates steering wheel in correct position.
7. Install new steering wheel attachment nut.

Torque:
Steering Wheel Nut: 40 N.m (30 ft-lbs)

8. Connect cruise control (if equipped) switch connectors and attach harness to wheel.

9. Connect inflator module wiring harness and install harness integral connector lock device.
10. Install driver inflator module. Be sure to seat all attachment points.
11. Enable SIR system.
