Water Pump: Service and Repair

WATER PUMP REPLACEMENT
(IN-VEHICLE)

^ TOOLS REQUIRED
- J43405 Engine Support Fixture Adapter
- SA9105E Engine Support Fixture (3 Bar)

REMOVAL

CAUTION: DO NOT REMOVE CAP OR OPEN COOLING SYSTEM DRAINS FROM A HOT SYSTEM. ALLOW SYSTEM TO COOL FIRST.





1. Disconnect negative battery cable.
2. Remove air cleaner inlet duct from throttle body.

CAUTION: BE SURE THE VEHICLE IS SECURELY SUPPORTED. TO HELP AVOID PERSONAL INJURY WHEN A VEHICLE IS ON A HOIST, PROVIDE ADDITIONAL SUPPORT FOR THE VEHICLE ON THE OPPOSITE END FROM WHICH COMPONENTS ARE BEING REMOVED.





3. Raise and support vehicle.
4. Remove right front wheel.
5. Remove splash shield bolts.
6. Remove splash shield.
7. Lower vehicle.





8. Loosen water pump pulley and power steering pump pulley attachment bolts. The accessory drive belt tension provides resistance to enable loosening of water pump pulley bolts. Do not remove bolts at this time.
9. Install Engine Support Fixture (3 Bar) SA9105E and Engine Support Fixture Adapter J43405 to support engine weight.

IMPORTANT: Removal of accessory drive belt requires removal of right front engine mount.





10. Remove accessory drive belt.

IMPORTANT: Use caution with releasing retaining tabs to reduce risk of breakage when removing wiring harness cover.





11. Release plastic retaining tabs on wiring harness channel on front cover and remove cover.
12. Note wiring harness routing.
13. Remove wiring harness from channel.
14. Remove water pump pulley bolt.
15. Remove water pump pulley.
16. Remove power steering pump pulley bolts.
17. Remove power steering pump pulley.
18. Remove accessory drive belt tensioner bolts.
19. Remove accessory drive belt tensioner.





20. Remove front timing belt cover bolts.
21. Remove front timing belt cover.
22. Inspect sealing strip on outer edge of front timing belt cover for cracks and/or tears.





23. Remove water pump and O-ring seal.

INSTALLATION





1. Install new water pump O-ring seal.
2. Install water pump.
3. Install water pump bolts.
Torque:
Water Pump Bolt: 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.)





4. Install front timing belt cover.
5. Install front timing belt cover bolts.
Torque:
Front Timing Belt Cover Bolt: 8 Nm (71 inch lbs.)





6. Install accessory drive belt tensioner.
7. Install accessory drive belt tensioner bolts.
Torque:
Belt Tensioner Bolts: 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.)
8. Install power steering pump pulley water pump pulley.
9. Install power steering pump pulley water pump pulley bolts.
10. Snug power steering pump pulley and water pump pulley bolts, the bolts will be torqued when accessory drive belt is installed.
11. Route wiring harness into wiring harness channel.
12. Install wiring harness channel.
13. Install wiring harness channel extension to right lower side of wiring harness channel.





14. Install accessory drive belt.
15. Tighten water pump pulley and power steering pump pulley bolts.
Torque:
Water Pump Pulley Bolt: 8 Nm (71 inch lbs.)
Power Steering Pump Pulley Bolt: 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.)





16. Remove Engine Support Fixture (3 Bar) SA9105E and Engine Support Fixture Adapter J43405.





17. Raise and support vehicle.
18. Install splash shield.
19. Install splash shield bolts. Tighten splash shield bolts until seated. Do not strip bolts.
Torque:
Splash Shield Bolts: 5 Nm (44 inch lbs.)
20. Install right front wheel.





21. Lower vehicle.
22. Install air resonator inlet duct to throttle body.
23. Reconnect negative battery cable.
Torque:
Battery Terminal Bolts: 17 Nm (13 ft. lbs.)
