CAMSHAFT REPLACEMENT-FRONT(IN-VEHICLE)
- TOOLS REQUIRED
- J3526SA Camshaft/Front Main Seal Installer
- J42069 Timing Belt Alignment Kit
- SA9140E Torque Angle Gauge
REMOVAL
1. Disconnect negative battery cable.
2. Remove intake plenum.
3. Remove air cleaner assembly.
4. Remove front camshaft cover.
5. Remove front timing belt cover.
6. Remove timing belt.
IMPORTANT: As a precaution, rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise to 60 degrees BTDC position to prevent valve/piston contact.
7. Insert Timing Belt Alignment Kit J42069-2 Camshaft Gear Locking Tool into camshaft gears to hold them in place while loosening camshaft gear bolt.
8. Remove J42069-2 Camshaft Gear Locking Tool.
9. Remove camshaft gear bolt and discard.
10. Remove camshaft gear.
11. Loosen camshaft bearing cap bolts sequentially starting from center and moving outwards in a spiral direction.
IMPORTANT: Ensure that camshaft is not under load from lifter(s) and that camshaft comes out of bearing seat evenly.
12. Remove camshaft bearing cap bolts.
13. Remove camshaft bearing caps. Note marks on the bearing caps.
14. The bearing caps for the front side cylinder head are marked with an "R" followed by a number.
15. Remove camshaft with seal attached.
16. Remove camshaft seal.
17. Clean all bearing surfaces.
18. Clean all sealing surfaces.
INSTALLATION
1. Lubricate camshaft bearing surfaces with clean engine oil.
2. Install camshaft to cylinder head.
IMPORTANT: Ensure pin on exhaust camshaft is approximately in the 12 o'clock position and/or that the pin on intake camshaft is approximately in the 7 o'clock position to allow for minimal load on camshaft when installing bearing caps.
3. Apply a small amount of Loctite 518 (or equivalent) on forward edge of front bearing caps to ensure an adequate seal between bearing cap and cylinder head.
4. The bearing caps for front (CYL 2, 4, 6) cylinder head are marked R1-R8 (Cylinders 2, 4, 6).
5. Install camshaft bearing caps in their appropriate position.
6. Install camshaft bearing cap bolts.
IMPORTANT: DO NOT allow the sealer to get into the oil journal of cap.
Note: Tighten camshaft bearing cap bolts starting from center cap gradually.
Torque:
Camshaft Bearing Cap Bolt: 8 Nm (71 inch lbs.)
7. Coat lip of seal with a small amount of clean engine oil to aid in installation.
8. Use Camshaft/Front Main Seal Installer J35268A to install camshaft seal.
9. Ensure that camshaft seal is fully and evenly seated.
IMPORTANT: Use a new camshaft gear bolt. The required tightening method will stretch the bolt, to its yield point. Therefore the bolt is not reusable.
10. Install new camshaft gear bolt using Torque Angle Gauge SA9140E.
IMPORTANT: Use J42069-2 Camshaft Gear Locking Tool to hold camshaft gear and camshaft in place while tightening camshaft gear bolt.
Torque:
Camshaft Gear Bolt: 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.)+ 60 degrees + 15 degrees
11. Install timing belt.
12. Adjust timing belt.
13. Install timing belt cover.
14. Install front camshaft cover.
15. Install intake plenum.
16. Install air cleaner assembly.
