Shift Cable: Service and Repair

REMOVAL





1. Disable SIR system.
2. Remove air cleaner housing and duct assembly.





3. Remove small retainers at cable ends.
4. Disconnect the cable ends from the shift control housing.
5. Remove large cable to clutch housing retainers.

NOTICE: Do not drag cable boot through bracket hole as boot damage may occur.





6. Lift cable out of clutch housing bracket.
7. Remove shifter control assembly.

IMPORTANT: Carpet is held together by a hook and loop type tape.





8. Separate carpeting at front of dash under shift cables.
9. Remove the retainers, on both sides of the cable pass-through opening, holding the sound deadening material.
10. Roll back the sound deadening material at the front of dash to gain access to the cable pass through grommet.

CAUTION: MAKE SURE VEHICLE IS PROPERLY SUPPORTED AND SQUARELY POSITIONED. TO HELP AVOID PERSONAL INJURY WHEN A VEHICLE IS ON A HOIST, PROVIDE ADDITIONAL SUPPORT FOR THE VEHICLE ON THE OPPOSITE END FROM WHICH COMPONENTS ARE BEING REMOVED.

IMPORTANT: When removing and installing shift cables, it is helpful to have a second person inside vehicle to guide cables and prevent them from being tangled.





11. For service replacement shift cables, perform the following steps:
a. Raise vehicle.
b. Remove cable grommet from front of dash by removing the two retaining nuts and pushing the grommet and retaining plate into the vehicle.
c. Lower vehicle and remove cables.
12. For production shift cables, perform the following steps:

NOTICE: There is a retaining tab on the passenger side of the cable pass-through grommet (as indicated by the thin arrow). Removing the grommet passenger side first may cause damage to the floor pan.





a. Place a large flat blade screwdriver against the driver's side of the cable pass through grommet as shown.
b. Push grommet toward passenger side of vehicle and outward to disengage grommet from floor pan.

CAUTION: MAKE SURE VEHICLE IS PROPERLY SUPPORTED AND SQUARELY POSITIONED. TO HELP AVOID PERSONAL INJURY WHEN A VEHICLE IS ON A HOIST, PROVIDE ADDITIONAL SUPPORT FOR THE VEHICLE ON THE OPPOSITE END FROM WHICH COMPONENTS ARE BEING REMOVED.

IMPORTANT: When removing and installing shift cables it is helpful to have a second person inside vehicle to guide cables and prevent them from being tangled.

c. Raise vehicle.
d. Remove cable and cable pass-through grommet from the outside of the vehicle.

INSTALLATION

IMPORTANT: All service replacement shift cables will have the bolt in type pass through grommet.

IMPORTANT: The bolt in type cable pass-through grommet is installed from the inside of the vehicle.





1. For service replacement shift cables, perform the following steps:
a. Separate and fold back sound deadener from front of dash.
b. Place cables and retaining plate through front of dash and push grommet into opening being sure to properly align grommet pilot into front of dash.

CAUTION: MAKE SURE VEHICLE IS PROPERLY SUPPORTED AND SQUARELY POSITIONED. TO HELP AVOID PERSONAL INJURY WHEN A VEHICLE IS ON A HOIST, PROVIDE ADDITIONAL SUPPORT FOR THE VEHICLE ON THE OPPOSITE END FROM WHICH COMPONENTS ARE BEING REMOVED.

IMPORTANT: When removing and installing shift cables it is helpful to have a second person inside vehicle to guide cables and prevent them from being tangled.

c. Raise vehicle.

IMPORTANT: Make sure insulation material does not become trapped between grommet and front of dash.

d. Place retaining plate on studs and install nuts.
- Torque: 6 Nm (53 inch lbs.)
2. For production shift cables, perform the following steps:

CAUTION: MAKE SURE VEHICLE IS PROPERLY SUPPORTED AND SQUARELY POSITIONED. TO HELP AVOID PERSONAL INJURY WHEN A VEHICLE IS ON A HOIST, PROVIDE ADDITIONAL SUPPORT FOR THE VEHICLE ON THE OPPOSITE END FROM WHICH COMPONENTS ARE BEING REMOVED.

IMPORTANT: When removing and installing shift cables it is helpful to have a second person inside vehicle to guide cables and prevent them from being tangled.

a. Raise vehicle.

IMPORTANT: The snap in type cable pass-through grommet is installed from outside of vehicle.

b. Guide cables through cable pass-through hole in floor pan.
c. Insert cable pass-through grommet into cable pass-through hole in floor pan, engaging passenger side of grommet first. Snap driver's side of grommet into place by pressing inward and toward passenger side of vehicle.
3. Lower vehicle.

NOTICE: Do not drag boot through bracket hole as boot damage may occur.





4. Insert cables into clutch housing anti install retainers. Use care not to kink cables and be sure cables arc not crossed.

IMPORTANT: The knurled edge on the shift cable must face up.

5. Connect the cables to the shift anus on the shift control housing and install retainers.





6. Install air cleaner housing and duct assembly.
7. Install shifter control assembly.
8. Replace sound deadening material and resecure to front of dash.
9. Replace carpeting.
10. Enable SIR system.
