Transaxle Assembly Installation

Tools Required
- SA9l05E Engine Support Bar Assembly
- J43405 Engine Support Fixture Adapter
- J44014 Torque Converter Bolt Socket
- J42098 V6 Crankshaft Bolt Socket

1. Place transaxle on hydraulic lift table and position table under vehicle. Slowly lower vehicle and position transaxle to engine.

IMPORTANT: The bottom two and top three engine-to-transaxle mounting bolts will be installed later in this procedure.

IMPORTANT: Ensure that the wiring harness bracket is installed behind the engine-to-transaxle mounting bolt near the starter motor on the V6 engine.

2. Install engine-to-transaxle mounting bolts as shown. (V6 shown, L4 similar)
Torque: 65 Nm (48 ft. lbs.)
3. Raise vehicle and remove hydraulic lift table.
4. Lower vehicle.

NOTICE: If the powertrain mount is not reinstalled in its original position, it could lead to premature mount wear.

5. Reference alignment marks made during disassembly and install left transaxle mount bolts.
Torque: 55 Nm (41 ft. lbs.)
6. Raise vehicle.
7. Install two bottom engine-to-transaxle mounting bolts.
Torque: 65 Nm (48 ft. lbs.)

NOTICE: Failure to lubricate the inside of the cooler line seals with DEXRON(R) 111 (P/N 21019228) automatic transaxle fluid before installing the cooler line assembly into the seals may cause damage to the seals.

8. Install transaxle oil cooler line assembly to transaxle.
Torque: 8 Nm (71 inch lbs.)

NOTICE: Torque converter bolt magnetic socket J44014 must be used to install the flex plate to torque converter bolts. Care must be taken not to drop the bolts inside the torque converter housing of the transaxle. If a bolt is dropped inside the housing, the transaxle must be separated from the engine to retrieve it.

9. Loosely install flex plate to torque converter bolts using torque converter bolt magnetic socket J44014 through starter opening. Torx(R) socket J42098 can be used to turn the V6 crankshaft. After all bolts are installed, torque.
Torque: 45 Nm (33 ft. lbs.)

10. Install starter assembly. (V6 shown, L4 similar)
Torque: 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.)
11. Connect starter solenoid electrical connections.
12. Install wire harness mounting bracket to rear of engine block. (V6 only)

13. Install engine-to-transaxle bracket. (L4 shown, V6 similar)
Torque: 35 Nm (26 ft. lbs.)

NOTICE: In order to prevent damage to axle shaft splices during vehicle operation, add grease (P/N 7843867) to splines prior to installing axle shafts.

14. Install new axle shaft retaining rings on end of output shafts of transaxle and install axle shafts into transaxle.
15. Install frame assembly.
16. Lower vehicle and remove engine support fixture.

17. Connect output speed sensor electrical connector. Secure harness to mounting stud.

18. Install generator. (V6 only)
Torque: 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.)

19. Install accessory drive belt tensioner assembly. (V6 only)
Torque: 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.)

20. Install accessory drive belt. (V6 only)
21. Install remaining transaxle-to-engine mounting bolts.
Torque: 65 Nm (48 ft. lbs.)

22. Install transaxle electrical connector and ground wire to transaxle.
Torque: 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.)
23. Install remaining wire harness attachments to transaxle side cover.
Torque: 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.)

24. Install control cable mounting bracket to rear powertrain mount.
Torque: 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.)
25. Connect control cable to transaxle range switch lever.

26. Install battery tray and battery tray fasteners.
Torque: 15 Nm (l1 ft. lbs.)

27. Install underhood fuse block case to battery tray and install bolt.
Torque: 9 Nm (80 inch lbs.)
28. Install wire harnesses to fuse block case. The wire harness grommets have retaining tabs that lock into the case when the harnesses are fully installed.
29. Snap fuse block onto fuse block case hinges.

30. Install following connectors to underhood fuse block:
(1) Engine 68-way
(2) Forward Lamp 68-way
(3) I/P 68-way
(4) Forward Lamp 2-way (white)
(5) I/P 2-way (black)
(6) I/P 2-way (green)
(7) I/P 2-way (brown)

31. Secure underhood fuse block to fuse block case by rotating down and snapping into place.
32. Install underhood fuse block cover.
33. Secure coolant hose into place on fuse block cover.
34. Install battery feed cable to underhood fuse block.
Torque: 16 Nm (12 ft. lbs.)

35. Install battery.
a. Install battery into battery tray.
b. Install battery hold-down bracket.
Torque: 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.)
c. Install fan control module by sliding down onto battery hold-down bracket.
