8. Final Drive Assembly Disassemble
1. Remove differential pinion shaft retaining pin. Use a pin punch.
IMPORTANT: If pinion gears are removed, place final drive carrier into a clean transaxle oil pan in order to prevent losing needle bearings.
2. Remove differential pinion shaft.
IMPORTANT: The snap ring is not reusable. Discard snap ring.
3. Remove snap ring from end of output shaft.
4. Remove output shaft from differential carrier.
5. Remove final drive sun gear.
6. Remove differential pinion gears and thrust washers.
7. Remove differential side gears and thrust washers.
8. Remove final drive carrier spiral retaining ring.
IMPORTANT: When removing pinion gears, note the orientation. Pinion gears must be installed in the same direction in which they were removed. If pinion gears are installed upside down, the change in set wear patterns will cause a noise condition.
9. Remove four planet pinion pins.
10. Remove four pinion gears.
11. Remove pinion thrust washers.
12. Remove needle roller bearings.
13. Remove needle bearing spacers.
14. Remove final drive sun gear to carrier thrust bearing.
15. Inspect needle bearings, thrust washers, pinion gears, and planet pinion pins for excessive wear. Polishing is a normal condition for the pinion pins and needle bearings.
16. Inspect pinion shaft for spelling or for wear.
17. Inspect thrust washers for wear and for cracks.
18. Clean and dry final drive carrier and final drive components.
