TECHNICAL INFORMATION BULLETIN
SUBJECT:
Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM) Connector Does Not Mate With Replacement SDM (Replace Terminal Retainer and Reprogram Body Control Module (BCM))
MODELS AFFECTED:
All 2000 Saturn L-Series Vehicles
CONDITION:
Replacement SDM will not mate with the instrument panel harness connector due to a change in configuration of the terminal retainer.
CAUSE:
This condition is caused by the replacement SDM terminal retainer having a different configuration than the original terminal retainer.
CORRECTION:
Replace SDM body harness terminal retainer and reprogram BCM.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
CAUTION:
BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU HANDLE A SENSING AND DIAGNOSTIC MODULE (SDM). DO NOT STRIKE OR JOLT THE SDM BEFORE APPLYING POWER TO THE SDM:
^ REMOVE ANY DIRT, GREASE, ETC. FROM THE MOUNTING SURFACE.
^ POSITION THE SDM HORIZONTALLY ON THE MOUNTING SURFACE.
^ TIGHTEN ALL OF THE SDM FASTENERS AND SDM BRACKET FASTENERS TO THE SPECIFIED TORQUE VALUE.
FAILURE TO FOLLOW THE CORRECT PROCEDURES COULD CAUSE AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT, PERSONAL INJURY, OR UNNECESSARY SIR SYSTEM REPAIRS.
NOTICE:
If sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) is dropped or shows any sign of damage, it must be replaced.
NOTICE:
Prior to removing sensing and diagnostic module (SDM), ignition key must be in the OFF position.
NOTICE:
Do not open the sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) case for any reason. Touching the connector pins or soldered components may cause electrostatic discharge damage. Repair of a faulty SDM is by replacement only.
1. Disable the SIR system. Refer to "SIR Disable/Enable" procedure in the General Information Section of the 2000/2001 Restraints Service Manual.
2. Remove rear console screws.
3. Remove front console screws.
4. Lift up at rear of console and remove console.
5. Remove connector position assurance (CPA) retainers and disconnect wire harnesses.
6. Remove retaining nuts and remove SDM.
7. Remove SDM terminal retainer from instrument panel harness connector with pocket screwdriver.
8. Install new SDM terminal retainer (P/N 15393727).
9. Install SDM to vehicle.
10. Install SDM retaining nuts.
Torque:
SDM Retaining Nuts: 10 Nm (89 in-lbs)
11. Connect wire harnesses and install CPA retainers.
12. Install console to vehicle.
13. Install console screws.
Torque:
Console Screws: 1.2 Nm (11 in-lbs)
14. Enable the SIR system. Refer to "SIR Disable/Enable" procedure in the General Information Section of the 2000/2001 Restraints Service Manual.
IMPORTANT:
Once replacement SDM has been installed it is necessary to reprogram the BCM in order for the BCM to recognize the part number of the replacement SDM. Refer to "BCM Programming in the Service Programming System section of the Service Stall System (SSS)/Tech 2 User Guide.
