REMOVAL
1. Disconnect negative battery cable.
2. Remove intake plenum. Refer to "Intake Plenum Replacement".
3. Remove air cleaner assembly.
4. Remove rear camshaft cover. Refer to "Camshaft Cover Replacement (Passenger Side)".
5. Remove timing belt cover. Refer to "Timing Belt Cover Replacement".
6. Remove timing belt. Refer to "Timing Belt Replacement".
IMPORTANT: As a precaution, rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise to 60 degrees BTDC position to prevent valve/piston contact.
7. Insert J-42069-1 Camshaft Locking Tool into camshaft gears to hold gear in place while loosening camshaft gear bolt.
8. Remove J-42069-1 Camshaft Locking Tool.
9. Remove camshaft gear bolt.
10. Remove camshaft gear.
IMPORTANT: Ensure that camshaft is not under load from lifter(s) and that camshaft comes out of bearing seats evenly.
11. Loosen camshaft bearing cap bolts sequentially starting from center and moving outwards in a spiral direction in stages of 1/2 to 1 turn.
12. Remove camshaft bearing cap bolts.
13. Remove camshaft bearing caps. Note the code marks on the bearing caps.
IMPORTANT: The bearing caps for the rear side (CYL 1, 3, 5) cylinder head are marked with and "e' followed by a number.
14. Remove camshaft with seal attached.
15. Remove camshaft seal.
16. Clean all bearing surfaces.
17. Clean all sealing surfaces
INSTALLATION
1. Lubricate camshaft bearing surfaces with clean engine oil.
2. Install camshaft to cylinder head.
IMPORTANT: Ensure pin on exhaust camshaft is approximately in the 1 o'clock position and/or that the pin on intake camshaft is approximately in the 11 o'clock position to allow for minimal load on camshaft when installing bearing caps.
3. Apply a small amount of Loctite (R) 573 (or equivalent) on forward edge of front bearing caps to ensure an adequate seal between bearing cap and cylinder head.
4. The bearing caps for rear (CYL 1, 3, 5) cylinder head are marked L1-L8 (Cylinder 1, 3, 5).
5. Install camshaft bearing caps in their appropriate position.
6. Install camshaft bearing cap bolts.
IMPORTANT: DO NOT allow the sealer to get into the oil journal of cap.
- Torque: 8 Nm (71 ft. lbs.)
7. Coat lip of seal with a small amount of clean engine oil to aid in installation.
8. Use J-35268-A to tap camshaft seal into place.
9. Ensure that camshaft seal is fully and evenly seated.
10. Install camshaft gear bolt. Use J-42069-1 and J-42069-2 camshaft gear locks to lock camshaft gears while torquing.
IMPORTANT: Use a new camshaft gear bolt. The required tightening method will stretch the bolt, to it's yield point, therefore, the bolt is not reusable.
- Torque: 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.) + 60° + 15°
