Backing Plate: Service and Repair
^ TOOLS REQUIRED- SA9140E Torque Angle Gauge
REMOVAL
CAUTION: MAKE SURE VEHICLE IS PROPERLY SUPPORTED AND SQUARELY POSITIONED ON HOIST.
1. Raise vehicle on hoist.
2. Remove rear wheel and tire assembly.
3. Disassemble rear drum brakes.
4. Disconnect rear brake pipe from wheel cylinder. Plug open brake pipes to prevent brake fluid loss and contamination.
5. Remove wheel cylinder fastener and wheel cylinder.
6. Remove park brake cable.
7. Remove hub-to-knuckle nuts, remove hub and backing plate from knuckle.
INSTALLATION
1. Position hub assembly and backing plate to knuckle and tighten using new nuts.
Torque: 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.) plus 30 to 45 degrees.
2. Install parking brake cable.
3. Install wheel cylinder and fastener.
Torque: 9 Nm (80 inch lbs.)
4. Install brake pipe onto wheel cylinder.
Torque: 16 Nm (12 ft. lbs.)
5. Completely assemble rear drum brakes.
NOTICE: Before installing wheels, remove rust or corrosion from wheel mounting surfaces and brake rotors/drums. Failure to do so can cause wheel bolts to loosen in service.
6. Position wheel and tire assembly onto hub.
7. Install wheel bolts and tighten in a crisscross pattern. Repeat tightening pattern to be sure torque is correct.
Torque: 125 Nm (92 ft. lbs.)
8. Lower vehicle from host.
9. Bleed brakes.
