Brake Pads Replacement - Front

REMOVAL

CAUTION: MAKE SURE VEHICLE IS PROPERLY SUPPORTED AND SQUARELY POSITIONED ON HOIST.

1. Raise vehicle on hoist.
2. Remove front wheel and tire assemblies.
3. Pry off locking plate and remove brake pressure hose from strut.

4. Remove pad retainer spring.

NOTICE: Do not let weight of caliper hang on brake hose as this could damage the brake hose. Use mechanics wire to tie caliper to strut.

5. Remove caliper-to-bracket guide pins.
6. Remove caliper assembly.

7. Remove inboard and outboard brake pads from caliper assembly.
8. Inspect:
a. Guide pin boots and covers for damage. If damaged, replace.
b. Piston boot for deterioration. If damage, overhaul the caliper.
c. Guide pin for damage or corrosion. Replace if damaged or corroded (do not attempt to clean away corrosion).
9. Repeat steps 3 through 8 for opposite side of vehicle.

INSTALLATION

IMPORTANT: Never replace brake pads on one side of axle only. Left and right side brake pads must be replaced only as axle sets.

IMPORTANT: Piston boot must lie flat, below level of the piston face.

1. Using a C-clamp, bottom piston all way into caliper bore.

NOTICE: Install linings so arrow is pointing downward, with forward rotation of wheel.

IMPORTANT: Before installing new brake pads, ensure that piston is correctly positioned, two raised thrust surfaces of piston must lie horizontally.

IMPORTANT: Remove all rust and corrosion from caliper brackets when installing brake pads. If installing used brake pads, remove all rust and corrosion from ends of brake pads and from the notch. Make sure brake pads move freely in caliper bracket when brakes are assembled.

2. Install inner and outer brake pads into calipers.

3. Position caliper onto caliper support bracket.

NOTICE: Be careful not to damage guide pin boots.

4. Lubricate straight section (not threads) of guide pins with silicon grease.
5. Install guide pins through caliper body into caliper support and tighten.
Torque: 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.)

6. Install brake pad retention spring.

7. Re-attach brake hose to strut assembly and install lock plate
8. Repeat steps 1 through 7 for opposite side of vehicle.

NOTICE: Before installing wheels, remove rust or corrosion from wheel mounting surfaces and brake rotors/drums. Failure to do so can cause wheel bolts to loosen in service.

9. Position wheel onto hub.
10. Install wheel bolts and tighten in a crisscross pattern. Repeat tightening pattern to be sure torque is correct.
Torque: 125 Nm (92 ft. lbs.)
11. Lower vehicle from hoist.

CAUTION: IF THIS OPERATION IS NOT CARRIED OUT, BRAKES WILL NOT OPERATE DURING INITIAL BRAKE APPLICATIONS.

12. Prior to operating vehicle, depress the brake pedal a few times until brake pads are seated against rotor.
