Tools Required

KM-210 Steering Wheel Puller


Removal Procedure





1. Put shifter in neutral and block the wheels
2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
3. Disable the SIR System. Refer to LINK procedure in this service manual. However, you will not be able to remove the key from the ignition.
4. Gently pull on the left and right side console extensions to remove the extensions




5. On power windows, using a small flat blade tool, gently pry upward on the rear portion of the power window switch to partially disengage the switch from the console.
6. Disconnect power window switch harness from switch and remove the power window switch.




7. Disengage console park brake boot by squeezing the boot in while pulling upward.
8. Lift the park brake boot over the park brake assembly.




9. Remove the front console tray by pulling upward on the tray assembly.
10. Disconnect the console wiring harness from the main body harness located under the front console tray.




11. On automatic transmissions, pull up on PRNDL cover to disengage cover.




12. On 5-speed transmissions, pull up on the shifter boot to disengage the boot.




13. Move the front seats to the forward most position and remove the console rear fasteners.
14. Remove the console front fasteners
15. Gently lift the console up and over the shifter or the PRNDL cover and remove the console assembly.




16. Remove the I/P-to-floor pan bracket nuts from studs.




17. Remove the center trim plate by grabbing the trim plate at the A/C vent area and gently pulling it to disengage the attaching clips.
18. Tilt the trim plate sideways and disconnect the trim plate switch harnesses, then remove the trim plate.




19. Remove the radio fasteners and partially remove the radio to expose the radio electrical connectors.
20. Disconnect the radio electrical connectors, antenna, and radio ground strap from radio. then remove the radio.




21. Remove the HVAC control head fasteners and partially remove the controller. Let the control head hang loose in the I/P opening.




22. Disconnect the wiring harness clip from the I/P at the center outlet.




23. Turn the steering wheel to the 3 o'clock position.
24. Remove the inflator module by inserting a stubby flat blade screwdriver into the triangle shaped hole in the rear steering wheel shroud.
25. Turn the screwdriver to release the spring fastener , while lifting up on the corner of the bag closest to the fastener.
26. Repeat for the second fastener.
27. Turn the steering wheel to 9 o' clock.
28. Repeat steps until all spring fasteners are released.




29. Disconnect the inflator module harness and horn lead.
30. Remove the inflator module.




31. Disconnect the cruise control if equipped, switch the connection and disconnect the harness from the steering wheel




32. Remove the steering wheel attachment nut and discard.




33. Install the Steering Wheel Puller KM-210.
34. Remove the steering wheel feeding the wiring through the wiring through the wheel opening

Important: Always align the front wheels to the straight-ahead position when installing or removing a coil assembly. If a coil is removed without the wheels in a straight-ahead position and steering wheel has not been moved, the same coil assembly can be reinstalled if coil hub has not been rotated.



Important: If yellow tab is not available, use tape to prevent SIR coil hub has not been rotated


35. Insert the yellow tab or use a piece of tape to prevent the SIR from rotating.




36. Remove the upper and lower steering column cover attachments.




37. Remove the ignition switch bezel and remove the covers.




38. Remove the wiper/washer switch and headlamp/turn switch.

Important: Cover the top of the steering column.


39. Position the steering column to its lowest




40. Remove the left side I/P lower closeout panel, hush panel, retainers and let closeout panel hush panel hang loose.




41. Remove the I/P filler, knee bolster by pulling at the attaching clip locations.




42. Remove the upper and lower I/P cluster trim plate fasteners and remove trim plate
43. Remove the upper and lower I/P clusters fasteners and pull rearward to remove the cluster.




44. Disconnect the I/P cluster wiring harness from I/P cluster.




45. Remove the left side HVAC vent housing and disconnect the electrical connections.




46. Remove the left side lower air outlet duct.




47. Open the glove compartment door.
48. Remove the glove compartment lamp assembly by pulling on the lamp plunger.
49. Disconnect the glove compartment lamp wiring harness connector from the glove compartment lamp.




50. Remove the right side I/P lower closeout panel hush panel
51. Pull the closeout panel hush panel rearward to detach from the forward retainers.




52. Remove the right side heater outlet assembly retainer and remove the outlet.




53. Remove the glove compartment door fasteners and door.




54. Remove the glove compartment bin fasteners.




55. Slowly remove the glove compartment bin tilting bin downward to expose the BCM residing on top of the glove compartment.
56. Remove the BCM from the glove compartment by sliding module out of the attaching slots.
57. Remove the glove compartment bin.
58. Let the BCM hang on the wiring harness.




59. Pull upward at the vent locations and remove the windshield defroster grille.




60. Unsnap the hood release handle from the I/P by using a small screwdriver to disengage retainer clips on both sides.




61. Remove the data link connector (DLC) by pulling downward at connector location.




62. Remove the I/P harness clips to I/P at the lower steering column location.




63. Remove the I/P harness clips to the I/P at the center outlet and glove compartment opening location.




64. Remove the fastener at the left side I/P to beam the location.
65. Remove the two fasteners behind the I/P cluster location.
66. Remove the two fasteners at the upper glove compartment location.
67. Remove the two fasteners at the end bracket location.
68. Remove the three fasteners at the windshield defroster location.




69. Carefully remove the I/P assembly from the vehicle
