Alternator, B284, 4WD, (LHD)
To remove
1. Remove the battery cover and disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Raise the car.
3. Remove the front right wheel.
4. Remove the right-hand wing liner (A).
5. Relieve the belt tensioner and unhook the belt. Use a 1/2 inch drawbar handle (B).
6. Remove the bolt (C) from the steering swivel member, lower the suspension arm and place a 83 95 238 Wedge between the suspension arm and the anti-roll bar.
7. Tap the drive shaft out of the intermediate shaft with a brass drift and large hammer (D). Move aside the drive shaft.
WARNING: Use protective goggles to protect against flying splinters of metal.
8. Remove the alternator's electrical contacts (A).
9. Remove the alternator's retaining bolts (B). If necessary, push the engine to the left slightly.
10. Move the alternator backwards and remove its bracket (A).
11. Move out the alternator.
To fit
1. Move in the alternator. Fit the alternator bracket. (A)
Tightening torque, M8 22 Nm (16 lbf ft)
Tightening torque M10 38 Nm (28 lbf ft)
2. Fit the alternator (B). If necessary, push the engine to the left slightly. If the alternator's upper bolts cannot be fitted, grind away 4 mm of the bolt's control stud.
Tightening torque 24 Nm (18 lbf ft)
3. Fit the alternator's electrical contacts (A).
4. Grease the drive shaft splines with 90 513 210 Universal paste and make sure the rubber seal is mounted on the shaft.
5. Fit the drive shaft to the intermediate shaft. Make sure the lock ring clicks into place.
6. Remove the wedge and connect the ball joint to the steering swivel member with a nut and bolt (C). The pin must be visible above the steering swivel member before the bolt is fitted. Tighten the nut.
WARNING:
^ Press up the pin carefully.
^ The groove in the pin must be visible in the screw hole in the spindle housing.
^ If the rubber gaiter is pressed down, it will not seal properly to the swivel pin.
Tightening torque 50 Nm (37 lbf ft)
7. Relieve the belt tensioner, use a 1/2 inch drawbar handle (B) and mount the belt.
8. Fit the right-hand wing liner (A).
9. Fit the wheel.
10. Lower the car.
11. Connect the negative cable of the battery.
12. Fit the battery cover.
13. Reset the car.
