Main task
The function of the headlamps is to provide main beam, dipped beam, parking lights, direction indicators and side marker lights to the front of the car and to adjust the beam longitudinally and laterally.

Type
The headlamp housing contains bulbs for direction indicator, dipped beam, main beam, and LEDs for parking light and side marker light. The light sources are protected by one clear plastic lens. Also included in the headlamp module are stepper motors for headlamp levelling and lateral control, position sensors for lateral adjustment, control module for AFL control, ballast, ignition transformer and a solenoid for dimming.

There is a screen in front of the dipped beam bulb, the position of which can be adjusted with a control to change the dipped beam light image between right-hand and left-hand traffic.

The direction indicator is located farthest out towards the long side of the car in a reflector. The amber-colored bulb is 21 W.

A projector headlamp is located in the center. It has a light opening diameter of 70 mm. The projector headlamp is used for both main and dipped beam. A dimming screen drops down when main beam is to be used. The bulb is a discharge bulb of type D1S 35 W. The igniter is built into the bulb socket. The ballast of the discharge bulb is located at the bottom of the headlamp housing.

Another headlamp is located further in toward the center of the car. It is used as a supplement for main beam (H7 55 W) or as a "Daytime Running Light", DRL, (4157K) for the US/CA/MX markets.

The upper section of the light cluster contains an LED which is used for the parking light. On the side are three LEDs fitted as a side marker light.

In cars with AHL the beam length is controlled by a stepper motor which is controlled from the AHL control module.

In cars with AFL, the AFL control module communicates with the headlamp control module that controls the stepper motors for beam length and lateral adjustment settings. A sensor for controlling lateral movement is also connected to the headlamp control module.
