Driver Airbag
Driver Airbag
The driver airbag is mounted in the steering wheel. The driver airbag is a "smart" airbag that inflates in two stages. The airbag is connected to the control module as shown below and under Control module connections, Airbag (SRS) LHD and Airbag (SRS) RHD.
On the driver's side is a gas generator and airbag. The gas generator is fitted in a plastic housing. The airbag is protected by a plastic casing with fracture lines fitted to the metal bracket. The airbag has a volume of 60 litres.
The steering wheel centre pad (airbag module) is supplied with test and detonation current from a coil spring (contact roller), which also supplies the SID with information from the steering wheel buttons.
Driver airbag gas generator
1. Gas generator, 70%
2. Gas generator, 30%
The gas generator comprises a light-alloy housing, electric detonator, explosive charge and filter. The gas generator is detonated in two stages: a primary stage (70%) and secondary stage (30%). The delay between the two detonations depends on the information the control module receives from the various sensors.
On receiving an activation command, the control module sends a current pulse to the detonator which ignites the explosive charge. On combustion, this explosive charge generates a gas. The filter cools the gas and removes particles from it before it passes into the airbag.
