In cars with automatic transmission, the gear selector indicator displays the selected gear by lighting the corresponding gear symbol. If manual gear position, M, is selected, the selected gear will be displayed (1-5).

Gear position indication consists of 6 or 7 segments, each with an individual diode next to the corresponding symbol (P,R,N,D,M,L or P,R,N,D,4,3,L) and 5 symbols (1,2,3,4,5) for cars with Sentronic which are displayed with diodes. The brightness of the diode display is controlled with the rheostat level.

The diodes receive a voltage feed in the main instrument panel and are grounded internally in the main instrument panel. The TCM sends continuous bus information regarding the gear selector position as value "P,R,N,D,M,L" or "P,R,N,D,4,3,L".

The main instrument panel control module grounds the diode output to each corresponding gear position symbol which comes on while other symbols are switched off. If another gear selector position is selected, the bus information status is changed and the symbol which was previously lit switches off and the symbol for the newly-selected gear position is switched on.

Diagnostics
The function has its own diagnostics in the sending system.
