Suspension - Front Suspension Knocking/Banging Noises

Noise in the MacPherson strut

Background

Water may enter the thrust bearing and cause corrosion.

A new, improved sealed thrust bearing has been produced. Water protection according to TSB 731-2643 edition 1 must not be mounted on the new thrust bearing.

In the case of customer complaint, the following procedure must be carried out.

Symptom description

Knocking noise while turning the steering wheel, or banging noise when driving on uneven roads.

Parts required

11 900 364 Screw (3 per MacPherson strut)
13 270 705 Thrust bearing

Procedure

1. Remove the MacPherson strut, in accordance with WIS - Suspension, wheels - Front suspension - Adjustment/Replacement.

2. Dismantle the MacPherson strut, in accordance with WIS - Suspension, wheels - Front suspension - Adjustment/Replacement.

3. Thrust bearing replacement.

NOTE: Water protection according to TSB 731-2643 edition 1 must not be mounted.

4. Assemble the MacPherson strut, in accordance with WIS - Suspension, wheels - Front suspension - Adjustment/Replacement.

5. Fit the MacPherson strut, in accordance with WIS - Suspension, wheels - Front suspension - Adjustment/Replacement.
