Parking Assist Distance Sensor: Description and Operation
Ultrasound Distance Sensors (631 RL/RLC/RRC/RR)
Principal use
The four distance sensors use ultrasound to measure the distance to the object behind the car. They transmit wide angle ultrasound (120 degree horizontal and 60 degree vertical) and receive reflected acoustic signals. These signals are converted to digital signals that are conveyed to the control module for calculation of the distance to the closest object.
Type
Each distance sensor contains a piezo-electric element with a communication unit. The piezoelectric element acts as both a speaker element and a microphone element. The sensor has a plastic housing and is connected with three wires. The sensor is located in a holder and fastened with two clips. The holder is fastened in the centre decor strip on the rear bumper. The distance sensors are identical and interchangeable.
