Checking the ignition switch (ISM)
#3&:
Customer Satisfaction Campaign 154 16
Cars in stock must be rectified before delivery.
A personal communication must be sent to the owners of cars already delivered requesting them to get in touch with the nearest Saab garage as soon as possible to have the fault rectified.
Cars affected
Saab 9-3 (9440) M03 within VIN range 31000001 - 31007202
Background
Certain ignition switch units (ISM) have been discovered to break via a catch lug detaching, this is due to the material lacking rigidity. The lug must prevent the key from being turned from OFF to ON before all electrical signal processing is ready.
Parts required
16-84 71 211 Checking tool (1 per car)
The steel piece in the tool is calibrated to detach at 2.8-3.0 Nm.
If required: 12 786 386 ISM Ignition switch.
Procedure
Before proceeding, check the box A3 on the modification identity plate. Proceed as follows if the box is not marked.
1. Position the checking tool in the ignition switch (ISM).
2. Turn until the checking tool detaches. If it is possible to turn from OFF to ON without the tool detaching then the ignition switch unit must be replaced with a new one. Following completed checking the checking tool must be discarded irrespective of whether the checking tool detached or not.
Instructions for replacement of ignition switch unit (ISM): See WIS - 9-3 (9440) M03 - 3 Electrical System - Theft protection - Adjustment/Replacement - Ignition switch unit.
Marking the modification identity plate
When the work has been completed, the modification identity plate should be marked in box A3. If the work has been carried out by an importer, mark the box with the digit "7" or with "8" if the work is done by a dealer.
