Compressor HVAC: Service and Repair


Compressor (4-cyl)

To Remove





1. Place the car on a lift.
2. Drain the refrigerant from the A/C system.
3. Unplug the connector to the compressor located on the structure/console behind the right-hand headlamp.
4. Relieve the tension on the multigroove V-belt by compressing and locking the belt tensioner with a 3 mm Allen key.
5. Detach the inlet hose with mass air flow sensor without unplugging the connector and lay it on one side.
6. Remove the heat shield from the exhaust manifold.
7. Detach the by-pass pipe and valve and lay it on one side.
8. Unplug the radiator fan connectors on the fan cowling. Undo the hose clamps holding the hose to the coolant expansion tank.





Cars with automatic transmission:
Detach the oil cooler hose from the bottom of the fan cowling.

9. Remove the fan cowling, 2 bolts and 2 locating grooves.
10. Detach the pressure hose from the turbo.





11. Detach the high pressure hose from the compressor and lay it on one side. Plug the openings.





12. Detach the low pressure hose from the compressor and lay it on one side. Plug the openings.
13. Remove the multigroove V-belt from the compressor.





14. Unscrew the 3 compressor retaining screws starting with the top one.
15. Lift off the compressor from the mounting hook.

To fit





1. Adjust the oil volume in the compressor.
2. Hang the compressor on the mounting hook.
3. Screw on the compressor with 3 retaining screws.
Tightening torque 24 Nm (17.8 ft. lbs.)
4. Fit the multigroove V-belt on the belt pulley and release the belt tensioner. Check that it is positioned correctly.
Mount the air shields and lower the car.

5. Lubricate and fit the )-rings for the pipes to the compressor.





6. Connect the high-pressure pipe to the compressor, 1 bolt.
Tightening torque 20 Nm (14.8 ft. lbs.)
7. Connect the low-pressure pipe to the compressor, 1 bolt.
Tightening torque 20 Nm (14.8 ft. lbs.)
8. Connect the pressure hose to the turbo.





9 Fit the fan cowling, 2 locating grooves and 2 bolts.





10. Put back the hose clamps and plug in the radiator fan connectors on the fan cowling.
Cars with automatic transmission: Connect the oil cooler hose on the bottom of the fan cowling.
11. Plug in the connector to the compressor and press it into the holder on the structure/console behind the right-hand headlamp.





12. Fit the by-pass pipe and valve.
13. Fit the heat shield.
14. Connect the inlet hose and mass air flow sensor.
15. Vacuum the A/C system and fill with refrigerant R134a.
16. Running in the compressor to distribute the compressor oil in the system:
^ Activate the A/C and let it run for at least 2 minutes at an engine speed of <1500 rpm.
^ Turn off the A/C.
17 Test run the A/C system.
