Modification Instruction

Background

The Trionic T7 engine control modules manufactured before December 6, 1999 have rubber supports for the circuit board that are faulty. These supports contain substances that can accelerate oxidation, which in turn can lead to open circuits on the circuit board. This can produce symptoms such as starting problems and the engine running unevenly. The CHECK ENGINE lamp may illuminate and the car may go into limp-home mode.

If Recall 719 has already been performed, please see this bulletin for additional work that must be performed. If Recall 719 has not been performed, please see MI 291-2211 edition 3 for complete details on required work.

Symptom

Starting problems and engine running unevenly. CHECK ENGINE lamp may light.

Procedure

If Recall 719 has already been performed, please perform Steps 1-6 before proceeding with Recall 724.

1 Remove the engine cover.

2 Detach the vacuum hose from the camshaft cover.

3 Remove the crankcase ventilation hose from the nipple on the camshaft cover and remove the nipple from the cover.

4 Clean the nipple for the check valve vacuum hose by hand with a 2mm drill bit. Flush with compressed air to clean.

5 Fit the nipple to the camshaft cover and connect the hoses to the nipple.

6 Refit engine cover.

If Recall 719 has not been performed, please see MI 291 - 2217 edition 3 and perform the steps outlined therein before proceeding with Recall 724 work.

Check box C4 on the campaign plate before taking any action. Continue as follows if the box is not marked. Check whether the Trionic T7 engine control module is manufactured before December 6, 1999 (year 1999, day 340) as follows:

1 Connect Tech 2 to the car's data link connector. Turn the ignition ON.

2 Select "(FO): Diagnostics" from the main menu.

3 Select "Model Year" and "Vehicle type".

4 Select "Engine" from the menu.

5 Select "Trionic".

6 Select "Date of Manufacture".

7 If the control module is manufactured on December 6, 1999 (1999, day 340) or later, no action need be taken.

If the control module is manufactured before December 6, 1999 (1999, day 340), change the control module.

(Example: Year 1999, day 001 = January 1, 1999. Year 1999, day 365 = December 31, 1999).

8 Turn the ignition OFF.

9 If the control module is to be changed, see WIS, Engine - Trionic T7 - Adjustment/replacement - Control module.

Programming the immobilizer code

1 Connect Tech 2 to the car's data link connector. Turn the ignition ON.

2 Select "(FO): Diagnostics" from the main menu.

3 Select "Model Year" and "Vehicle Type".

4 Select "(F2): Body" from the menu.

5 Select "TWICE" (Theft Warning Central Electronics).

6 Start programming of the immobilizer by selecting "Immobilization" (F2) from the menu.

7 Follow the instructions on Tech 2. The procedure is complete when the message "Immobilizer code programmed" is displayed.

8 Erase any diagnostic trouble codes. Fuse 17 may need to be removed and refitted for communication with Tech 2 to be possible.

Checking and resetting

1 Switch off Tech 2 and turn the ignition OFF.

2 Start the engine.

3 If the engine does not start, turn off the ignition and then remove and refit fuse 17.

4 Start the engine. Depress the accelerator and then check if any new diagnostic trouble codes have been generated. Rectify and erase any diagnostic trouble codes.

5 Turn the ignition OFF and wait 10 seconds. Check that the throttle is not in limp-home mode as follows:

a 4-cyl.: Remove the upper engine cover.

b 4-cyl.: Remove the cover from the throttle body.

c Turn the pedal arm clockwise. The top illustration shows 4-cyl and the bottom V6.

d Check that the throttle arm does not make the reciprocal movement when the pedal arm is turned.

e To reset limp-home mode, if necessary see WIS - Engine - Trionic T7 - Adjustment/replacement - Resetting triggered limp-home solenoid.

f 4-cyl.: Fit the cover over the throttle body and the upper engine cover.
