Shifting Pattern on Start, Cars With Turbo

In combination with turbo engines, a special shifting pattern is used for the first 60 seconds after starting.

When the ignition is turned to drive position and when the starter motor is cranking, the engine control module sends an engine temperature signal instead of a throttle position signal. The transmission control module uses this information to determine how long the special shifting pattern should be applied.

In practice, the shifting pattern means that upshifting takes place at higher speeds, i.e. the transmission stays in each gear for a longer period of time. This is performed so that the engine and catalytic converter will warm up faster.
