Diagnostic Procedure

1. Select The System

Select the type of engine management system the car is fitted with

MOTRONIC
Go to step 2

TRIONIC
Go to step 9

2. Checking The Control Module's Output





Unplug the connector
- Motronic (505)

Go to step 3

3. Checking The Control Module's Output

Connect test lamp 86 11 857 between pin 51 of the female connector and a good grounding point.





Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.

Go to step 4

4. Checking The Control Module's Output





Contact TCM.

Activate Torque Limitation
- Value should read On.

The test lamp should light.

Is the function correct?

NO
Go to step 5

YES
Go to step 6

5. Rectifying The Lead

Repair or replace the lead between pin 25 of the TCM and pin 51 of the Motronic control module.

6. Final Check





Clear the diagnostic trouble codes in all systems.

Carry out a drive cycle
- Drive the car at varying engine loads and engine rpm for five minutes.

Evaluate the drive cycle





Check that the diagnostic trouble code has not recurred

Is the function correct?

NO
Go to step 8

YES
Go to step 7

7. Final Check

The steps taken to rectify the fault were correct.
- Diagnosis is complete

Diagnosis for this fault code is complete.
Refer to Procedures, Before Changing A Control Module.

9. Checking The Control Module's Output





Unplug the connector
- Control module, TRIONIC (430a)

Go to step 10

Connect test lamp 86 11 857 between pin 13 of the female connector and a good grounding point.





Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.

Go to step 11

11. Checking The Control Module's Output





Contact TCM.

Activate Torque Limitation
- Value should read ON

The test lamp should light.

Is the function correct?

NO
Go to step 12

YES
Go to step 13

12. Rectifying The Lead

Repair or replace the lead between pin 25 of the transmission control module and pin 13 of the TRIONIC control module.

When repair is complete:
Go to step 13

13. Final Check





Clear the diagnostic trouble codes in all systems.

Carry out a drive cycle:
Drive the car at varying engine loads and engine rpm for five minutes.

Evaluate the drive cycle:





Check that the diagnostic trouble code has not recurred

Is the function correct?

NO
Go to step 15

YES
Go to step 14

14. Final Check

The steps taken to rectify the fault were correct.
Diagnosis is complete

15. Final Check

Diagnosis for this fault code is complete.
