Addressing complaint of poor cold or hot restart
Cars affected
1999 Saab 9-5 Models up to VIN X3079510
Background
To address a customer complaint of cold or hot restart on a 1999 Saab 9-5 model, we now have the software available within Tech 2 to upgrade engine control module programming. DTCs P1230, P1240, P1251 or P1253 will also be addressed with this new software.
This is done using the new essential special tool:
Service Programming System (SPS) hardware key along with Tech 2.
Tools
SPS Hardware Key
Tech 2 with version 32.000 or later
TIS 2000 Version 1.0 or later
! WARNING
IF PROGRAMMING IS INTERRUPTED, THE ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE WILL BECOME UNSERVICEABLE!
Programming will take about 20 minutes. During that time, the programming must NOT be interrupted, i.e., by disconnecting Tech 2 or if the battery voltage is too low.
DICE will start the radiator fan when Trionic is being programmed. This is because there will not be an engine temperature signal on the bus from Trionic.
When reprogramming Trionic, carefully follow the description below for successful results:
1 Connect Tech 2 to the data link connector.
2 Start Tech 2 and select:
F5: Service Programming System (SPS)
3 Select:
F0: Request Information
4 Then, select:
^ Model year
^ Car type
^ Group (Engine)
^ Car system (Trionic)
5 Then, follow the directions given on Tech 2.
Action
6 Disconnect Tech 2 from the car and connect it to the COM port of the computer (flat cable). See figure. TIS 2000 must be installed on the computer. If necessary, see the "Installation" section.
7 Select SPS on the computer and follow the directions on the computer.
8 See if there is a newer software version on the computer than the one that is at present in Trionic. If there is, download it to Tech 2.
9 Disconnect Tech 2 from the computer and reconnect it to the car.
10 Important:
Make sure the car's battery is in good condition and turn off all power consumers:
^ ACC
^ Lights (pull daytime running light fuse)
^ Radiator fan (unplug the connector at the radiator fan)
11 Start Tech 2 and select:
F5: Service Programming System (SPS)
12 Select:
F1: Programming Control Module
13 Follow the directions shown on Tech 2.
14 Wait for the programming to complete: it will take about 20 minutes.
15 When programming is finished:
^ Turn off the ignition
^ Reconnect the radiator fan
^ Try to start the car
If the engine fails to start:
Turn off the ignition, remove and refit the fuse for Trionic (fuse no. 17 for 9-5, fuse no. 28 for 9-3). The vehicle should now start.
