Fuel Filler Neck: Service and Repair




Fuel filler pipe

WARNING
: Removal of the fuel filler pipe involves partial dismantling of the car's fuel system. The following points must therefore be observed in connection with this work:
- Work only in a well-ventilated area. If approved equipment for the extraction of fuel vapors is available, be sure to use it.
- Wear suitable gloves Prolonged contact with fuel can cause skin irritation or dermatitis.
- Keep a class BE fire extinguisher near at hand. Be mindful of the danger of sparks caused by short circuits and when connecting and disconnecting leads in electrical circuits.
- No smoking anywhere in the vicinity,
- Wear protective goggles.






To Remove

1 Make sure that the tank is not more than 3/4 full.
2 Raise the car and remove the right-hand rear wheel.
3 Remove the wing liner and edge moulding. Remove the edge moulding first.






4 Undo the hose clips at the tank and separate the purge pipe, using tool 83 94 702.






5 Undo the bolt securing the pipe.

Important
To prevent dirt from entering the filler pipe when it is removed, plug the pipe with a cloth.

6 Open the filler flap and remove the filler cap.
7 Remove the tiller pipe.

To fit
Fit in reverse order. Spray hose clips with Tectyl ML, part No. 30 21 763 or equivalent.

Tightening torque
plastic bolt: 1.8 Nm (1.3 lbf ft) Tightening torque
hose clips: 2.2 Nm (1.6 lbf ft)

Important
When fitting the filler pipe it is important to replace the old bolt with a new one of plastic. In the event of a collision the plastic screw should give way so that the filler pipe, which is also made of plastic, will not be damaged.
