Tie Rod Boot: Service and Repair


Dust excluder, steering gear
To remove





1. Raise the car. If a jack is used, safety stands should be placed under the car.
2. Remove the wheel.
3. Slacken the locknut.





4. Undo the nut securing the track-rod end to the steering swivel member.
5. Remove the track rod end from the steering swivel member, using -> Puller, ball joint 89 96 696.





6. Unscrew the track-rod end from the track rod, counting the number of turns, and unscrew the locknut.





7. Blow clean with compressed air, undo the dust excluder clips and remove the dust excluder.

To fit





1. Clean the track rod and ball joint as necessary and lubricate with lithium grease such as Shell EP B2 Code 71303, Shell Retinax A or the equivalent.
2. Fit a new dust excluder on the track rod and steering gear housing. Fit new clips and use pliers 30 16 235 to secure them.





3. Screw the locknut onto the track rod.





4. Screw in the track-rod end the same number of turns as when it was removed, but do not tighten the locknut.
Bolt the track-rod end to the steering swivel member.
Tightening torque 60 Nm (45 ft. lbs.).
6. Fit the wheel.
Tightening torque 110 Nm (81 ft. lbs.).
Lower the car to the floor.
7. Check the toe-in and adjust if required; see Wheel alignment
8. Tighten the track rod's locknut.
Tightening torque 70 Nm (55 ft. lbs.).
