Drive Shafts
To remove, right-hand

Important: Greatest possible cleanliness must be maintained when working with drive shafts and universal joints in order to avoid dust and dirt entering the universal joints. Therefore, wheel housings, MacPherson struts and other surfaces around drive shafts and universal joints must be thoroughly washed before beginning any work.

1. Remove the hub cap and undo the hub centre nut (leave the nut on).
2. Lift the car and remove the wheel.

3. Remove the hub centre nut.
4. Undo the nut on the ball joint bolt.
5. Remove the ball joint bolt with 89 96 696 Puller.
6. Unscrew the nut on the anti-roll bar. Keep the washer and rubber bush safe. Lower the link arm.
7. Tap the drive shaft out of the hub with a rubber mallet.
8. Angle out the suspension strut and pull out the drive shaft. Make sure not to stretch brake hoses or sensor cables.
9. Clean around the gaiter and remove the clamp.
10. Lift out the shaft.

To fit, right-hand

Important: Always fit a new hub centre nut after it has been removed, as the locking function of the nut is reduced when it is refitted.

1. Fill the universal joint with grease following List of lubricants and sealants.

2. Fit the inner universal joint to the driver.
3. Fit a new clamp. It is important that the clamp is fitted as illustrated.
4. Angle out the suspension strut and place the drive shaft into the hub.

5. Lift the link arm and place the ball joint bolt into the steering knuckle housing. Tighten the bolt.
Tightening torque: 75 Nm (55.4 ft. lbs.)
6. Fit the bush, washer and nut on the anti-roll bar.
Tightening torque: 10 Nm (7.4 ft. lbs.)
7. Fit the wheel and tighten the wheel bolts.
Tightening torque 110 Nm (81 ft. lbs.)
8. Lower the car to the floor.
9. Fit and tighten the hub centre nut to torque.

Warning: Always fit a new hub-centre nut if it has been revved because the clamping force of the lock indentations will be reduced if the old one is refitted. Use a nut with top groove.

Tightening torque, nut with top groove 170 Nm (125 ft. lbs.) + 45°
Tightening torque, nut without top groove 290 Nm (214 ft. lbs.)

10. Fit the hub cap.
