Procedure

Replace the soft top cover drive mechanism shear pin as follows:

1. The soft top cover must be lowered and latched.

2. Open the trunk lid and remove the right side screw and two (2) plastic rivets for the soft top storage. Fold down the upholstery.

Make a reference mark on the soft top cover drive universal joint between the joint and the control shaft (drive to facilitate proper re-assembly.

Remove the two (2) 8 mm bolts securing the soft top cover drive assembly.

Lift the hydraulic soft top. cover drive assembly slightly, moving it back towards the rear of the vehicle while guiding the universal joint off the soft top cover control shaft(spring assembly.

Remove the universal joint from the hydraulic soft top cover drive. (You may have to tap it off with a soft hammer but it will come off fairly easily if the pin is sheared).

3. Move the 0-ring on the universal joint to the side.

4. Use a 3.5 mm punch to tap out the 3 pieces of the pin.

To fit

1. Paying attention to the reference mark made in step one, reinstall the universal joint on the soft top cover control shaft/spring assembly.

Lift the hydraulic soft top cover drive assembly back into position, guiding the shaft into the universal joint. Loosely install the 2 attachment bolts at this time.

Line up the holes in the universal joint with the hole in the drive shaft and tap in a new pin, making certain it is fully seated in the universal joint.

Tighten both 8 mm bolts securing the soft top cover drive assembly.

2. Refit the 0-ring.

3. Refit the upholstery for the soft top storage.

4. Check the latch adjustment of the soft top cover. See Adjustment, replacement, "Adjusting the soft top cover, (262)".

Important
If the soft top cover latch is incorrectly adjusted, this may be the reason for the pin breaking. It is, therefore, very important to check the adjustment of the soft top cover latch. See Adjustment, replacement, "Adjustment, replacement, "Adjusting the soft top cover, (262)".
