9-3

The temperature control knob loosens and the spindle in the control panel breaks

Cars affected
Saab 9-3 M98-with manual climate control (MCC).

Background

The splines of the temperature control knob can crack and cause the knob to loosen. When attempting to replace the knob, the spindle can break.

The procedure and fitting kit described in this SI should be used upon customer complaint. The entire control panel does not need to be replaced.

Make certain the car has the latest cable (yellow) and that the steps outlined in SI 854-2205 have been performed.

Symptoms

The temperature control loosens and the spindle in the control panel breaks.

Parts required

53 30 923 Fitting kit that contains spindle, lever, spring and ball

Procedure To remove

1. Remove the glove box.

2. Remove the side panel on the right side of the centre console.

3. Remove the screw that holds the clip plate with the wire to the climate control unit.

4. Press out the control panel from the rear together with the cable. Disconnect the connectors and the control shaft.

5. Remove the wire from the control panel.

6. Twist the temperature control knob to "Max heating" and push out the knob with a small screwdriver through the small hole on the rear of the panel.

7. Push the lever that the wire attaches to further towards the panel until it unlocks the gears.

8. Pull the lever down and out of the hole.

9. Pull the spindle out through the rear of the panel.

Fitting

1. Use grease from the parts that have been removed to grease the spindle and lever. Grease the ring gears and place a bit where the ball will be seated.

2. First fit the spring to the spindle, then the ball.

3. Insert the spindle into the panel until the ball stops against the panel. Use a small screwdriver to depress the ball. At the same time press in the spindle which will snap into the correct position.

Important:
Do not twist the spindle once it has snapped into the correct position.

4. Fit the lever to the panel.

5. Twist the lever clockwise, as seen from above, until it snaps into position.

6. Fit the temperature control knob.

7. Attach the wire to the panel.

8. Check that the gears are in the correct position by twisting the knob to "Max heating". The wire should now run in a straight line from its attachment through the centre of the lever axis and on to the clip plate.

9. Refit the control panel, the control shaft and connectors.

10. Refit the clip plate to the climate control unit.

11. Twist the temperature control knob to "Max cooling".

12. Check to make sure that the air-mixing damper seals correctly in respective end positions by turning the temperature control knob to both end positions

13. Refit the side panel and glove compartment.
