Steering Column Bearing


To remove





WARNING: Read the Safety and handling direction before starting work.

WARNING: If it is necessary to remove the contact roller, it is important that it is in its centered position when the steering wheel is replaced.

1. Remove the steering wheel in the following way:
a. Detach the airbag module from the steering wheel, 2 screws and plugs.
b. Lift out the airbag module and unplug the connector.
c. Loosen the steering wheel center nut but leave it screwed on to the outer threads and pull the steering wheel up to this point. Then remove the nut and carefully lift off the steering wheel.

IMPORTANT: As the steering wheel tends to loosen suddenly from its cone there is a risk of it catching the contact roller/leads and damaging them.





2. Remove the top and bottom steering column covers.





3. Remove two screws on the contact roller.
4. Unplug the connectors.





5. Remove the lock ring. There is no groove for the lock ring.
6. Remove the bolt to the bearing housing and detach the bearing housing by rotating it to the right (bayonet fitting). Press out the shaft from the bearing.

WARNING: The steering column shaft must not be taken apart.

7. Remove the tolerance ring (plastic) from the shaft.


To fit





1. Fit a new tolerance ring (plastic) in the bearing. Position the loose spring washer inside the bearing. Put the new bearing housing in place while pulling the shaft through the bearing.

IMPORTANT: Make sure the loose spring washer inside the bearing is fitted correctly.

2. Fit a new lock ring. There is no groove for the lock ring.





3. Plug in the connectors.
4. Screw on the two screws securing the contact roller. Adjust the contact roller center position as follows:
Tightening torque: 3 Nm (2.2 ft. lbs.)
a. Make sure the wheels are pointing straight ahead.
b. Rotate the contact roller clockwise until a steady resistance is felt.
c. Rotate the contact roller 2 turns in the opposite direction plus whatever is necessary for the electrical leads to stand straight up (12 o'clock).

NOTE: If a new contact roller is being fitted, the center position does not have to be adjusted. The roller is supplied in its center position and is secured with a transport lock. Remove the transport lock before fitting the steering wheel.

WARNING: Make sure the cables are not pinched when the bottom cover is fitted.





5. Fit the top and bottom steering column covers.





6. Fit the steering wheel and tighten the center nut.
Tightening torque: 38 Nm (28 ft. lbs.). Plug in the connectors and fit the airbag module in the steering wheel with two screws and plugs.
