Steering Column Assembly


To remove

WARNING: Read the safety and handling directions before starting work.

WARNING: Under no circumstances should the steering column shaft be separated or taken apart.

WARNING: Never use the steering column adjustment to knock loose the steering wheel, as this will damage the impact joint in the steering column assembly.


IMPORTANT: Ensure the wheels are pointing straight ahead before dismantling begins.





1. Remove the steering wheel.
^ Remove the airbag from the steering wheel, 2 plugs and screws.
^ Lift out the airbag module and unplug the connector.

IMPORTANT: As the steering wheel often comes away suddenly from the taper, there is a risk that the contact roller/wires will fasten on the steering wheel and be damaged.

^ Loosen the steering wheel center nut but leave it screwed on to the outer threads and pull the steering wheel up to this point. Then remove the nut and carefully lift off the steering wheel.





2. Remove the top and bottom steering column covers, three screws.





3. Remove the two contact roller bolts and the connector.
4. Undo the light switch, direction indicator and windscreen wiper stalk switches. In addition, undo the cable retainer from the bearing housing.





5. Remove the lower dashboard panel.
6. Undo two screws on the knee protection and remove it.





7. Remove the steering column universal joint lock bolt and lift off the joint from the pinion shaft.
8. Remove the lower steering column bolts above the air duct.
9. Remove the two upper steering column nuts under the instruments.
10. Lift out the steering column assembly.


To fit





1. Put the steering column assembly in to position and screw on the two upper nuts and the lower bolt.

IMPORTANT: The groove for the bolt in the pinion shaft.

2. Fit the intermediate shaft to the pinion shaft.
Tightening torque: 24 Nm (18 ft. lbs.)
3. Adjust the steering wheel to its lowest position and secure with the adjustment lever.

WARNING: Make sure no cables are pinched between the steering column assembly and the steering wheel men

4. Tighten the two upper nuts.
Tightening torque: 24 Nm (18 ft. lbs.)
5. Tighten the lower bolt.
Tightening torque: 24 Nm (18 ft. lbs.)





6. Fit the lower dashboard panel and the knee member.





7. Fit both the stalk switches and the cable retainer.
8. Tighten the two bolts securing the contact roller. Plug in the connectors.

WARNING: Make sure the cables are not pinched when the bottom cover is fitted.

Fit the top and bottom steering column covers.
Adjust the contact roller center position

NOTE: If a new contact roller is being fitted, the center position does not have to be adjusted. The roller is supplied in its center position and is secured with a transport lock. Remove the transport lock before fitting the steering wheel.

a. Make sure the wheels are pointing straight ahead.
b. Rotate the contact roller clockwise until a steady resistance is felt.





c. Rotate the contact roller 2 turns in the opposite direction plus whatever is necessary for the electrical leads to stand straight up ("12 o'clock").
9. Fit the steering wheel and tighten the center nut.
Tightening torque: 38 Nm (28 ft. lbs.).
10. Plug in the connectors and fit the airbag module in the steering wheel with two screws and plugs.
