The cap plays an important part in the tank integrity diagnosis. If the diagnosis indicates leakage, the Trionic control module grounds pin 29. This pin is connected to MIU. MIU then sends a the bus message "TIGHTEN FUEL FILLER CAP." The message is used by SID and it is shown on the display.
