Selector Lever Position Indicator








Selector Lever Position Indicator

Fault symptoms
Selector lever position indicator inoperative.

Condition
No diagnostic trouble code in the TCM. If there is a diagnostic trouble code in the TCM, see Automatic transmission, Fault diagnosis, diagnostic trouble code.

Diagnostic help
The lamps in the indicator display can be activated with the diagnostic tool.
- Select "Activate"
- Select the appropriate lamp.
Readings of the main instrument unit's 4 inputs (A/B/C/PA) from the selector lever position sensor can be obtained with the diagnostic tool. For the right combinations for the different selector lever positions, see Selector lever position indicator description, "Warning and indicator lamps."

Check the wiring harness
Jiggle the wiring harness at several points and in different directions to detect intermittent breaks and short-circuits in the leads. Observe the multimeter, test lamp or diagnostic tool during the test.

Diagnostic procedure

1. Check the diagnostic trouble codes in TCM
- Contact the TCM.






- Read DTC from: TCM.
Are there any diagnostic trouble codes?
YES
- Continue fault diagnosis as described for the diagnostic trouble code in question.
NO
- Go to step 2.

2. Check control module input A
- Contact Main instrument unit.






- Read value: Selector lever position sensor A (Main instrument unit).
- With the selector lever in position:
-P the reading should be ON.
-R the reading should be ON.
-N the reading should be OFF.
-D the reading should be OFF.
-3 the reading should be ON.
-2 the reading should be ON.
-1 the reading should be OFF.






Is the function correct?
YES
- Go to step 3.
NO
- Repair or replace the lead between pin 2 of the MIU's 22-pin connector and TCM pin 9
- Go to step 6.

3. Check control module input B
- Contact Main instrument unit.






- Read value: Selector lever position sensor B (Main instrument unit).
- With the selector lever in position:
-P the reading should be OFF.
-R the reading should be ON.
-N the reading should be ON.
-D the reading should be ON.
-3 the reading should be ON.
-2 the reading should be OFF.
-1 the reading should be OFF.






Is the function correct?
YES
- Go to step 4.
NO
- Repair or replace the lead between pin 3 of the MIU'S 22-pin connector and TCM pin 10.
- Go to step 6.

4. Check control module input C.
- Contact Main instrument unit.






- Read value: Selector lever position sensor C (Main instrument unit).
- With the selector lever in position:
-P the reading should be OFF.
-R the reading should be ON.
-N the reading should be OFF.
-D the reading should be ON.
-3 the reading should be ON.
-2 the reading should be ON.
-1 the reading should be OFF.






Is the function correct?
YES
- Go to step 5.
NO
- Repair or replace the lead between pin 4 of the MIU's 22-pin connector and TCM pin 28.
- Go to step 6.

5. Check control module input PA
- Contact Main instrument unit.






- Read value: Selector lever position sensor PA (Main instrument unit).
- With the selector lever in position:
-P the reading should be ON.
-R the reading should be OFF.
-N the reading should be ON.
-D the reading should be OFF.
-3 the reading should be ON.
-2 the reading should be OFF.
-1 the reading should be ON.






Is the function correct?
YES
- Go to step 6.
NO
- Repair or replace the lead between pin 5 of the MIU's 22-pin connector and TCM pin 27.
- Go to step 6.

6. Final check
- Clear the diagnostic trouble codes in all systems.






- Perform a functional test.






Is the function correct?
YES
- The steps taken to rectify the fault were correct.
NO
