Front Crankshaft Seal: Service and Repair




Replacing (in car)





1. Relieve the pressure on the belt tensioner using a ratchet handle extension and insert a 6 mm drill into the hole.

IMPORTANT: Exercise the utmost care to ensure that the belt tensioner does not break at its end position!

2. Raise the car, remove the front right wheel and remove the cover. Lift off the drive belt from the crankshaft belt pulley.





3. Remove the protective plate and insert the flywheel locking attachment, part no. 83 94 868, against the flywheel gear ring.





4. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
5. Remove the old seal with a screwdriver.





6. Fit the new seal with the fitting tool, part no. 83 94 876.
7. Fit the crankshaft pulley.
Tightening torque: 175 Nm (129.5 ft. lbs.)
8. Fit the drive belt. Check the position of the belt on all the belt pulleys and fit the cover.
9. Fit the wheel.
Tightening torque: 120 Nm (89 ft. lbs.)
10. Lower the car to the floor.





11. Relieve the belt tensioner with a ratchet handle extension and remove the drill.
12. Start the engine and run it at idling speed for a while. Switch off the engine and check that the belt is positioned correctly.
